GOD BLESS AMERICA! Hello, Linda Moore! I will browse around to see if I can find "Dicey Davis" and/or any of her family in the names I have been tracking... In the meantime, I have cc'd this message to several mailing lists & other "Davis" researchers - hopefully someone might have some info to share with you...or some advice on where you might research... Good Luck!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moore, Linda" <moore@ci.rocky-mount.nc.us> To: <peaches@strato.net> Sent: Saturday, July 19, 2003 11:50 AM Subject: Looking for Dicey Davis My Grandpa was William Leonard Mathis (1897-1977). He was a son of Benjamin David Mathis (1844-1918) and Dicey Ann (or Diceanna) Davis (Aug. 28, 1869-September 30, 1910). Benjamin David Mathis was a son of Leonard (or Lenard) Mathis. William Leonard Mathis was born in Colquitt County, GA. Benjamin Davis Mathis was born in Duplin County, NC. He served in the Civil War and was at Fort Sumpter, SC with Company C, 51st Regiment from Duplin County, NC Benjamin and Dicey Mathis had children: Clara (1893-1980); Kate (1896-1989); William Leonard (1897-1977); John Hearny (1903-1908); Nettie (1903-19790; and Hattie Jane (1907-1990). After Grandpa died in 1977, I corresonded frequently with my g-aunt Hattie who lived in Covington, GA. She was only 3 years old when her mother, Dicey Davis Mathis died and they were living in/near Defuniak Springs, Fl at the time. According to what Aunt Hattie said, Dicey Davis Mathis was from South Carolina, but she did not know the name of the town or county, although for some reason, she felt it was near Charleston. Recently I found a Dicey A. (or H) Davis on the 1880 census in Colleton County, SC. Dicey was listed as being 10 years old. That age is appropriate for my grandmother at that time. Considering that her father's name is "William" leads me to think that my Grandpa was given the first name "William" after his maternal grandfather. I know he was given the middle name "Leonard" after his paternal grandfather. This census also lists the following: William Davis, age 67 (head of household) E. Catherine Davis, age 46 (wife) David A Davis age 11 (son) Dicey A. Davis age 10 (daughter) Alice Varnadore age 28 (daughter) Sarah J. Varnadore age 8 (g-daughter) Lucious B. Varnadore age 6 (g-son) Lydia I. Varnadore age 1 (g-daughter) This listing was from Heyward, Colleton, South Carolina. Is this your Davis line or do you know anyone who is researching this line? Please advise. Thank you for your assistance.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ncB.2ACE/1406.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Carolyn, There are records for Ebenezer Church, most of them from the late 1880's - present. A book was done several years ago concerning the history of the church. I do know that Indian Field is much older than Ebenzer. Also, I have a land grant from Gov. Pierce M. Bulter giving more land (some 700 acres) to Jacob Whetsell and his brother (my ancestor), John Whetsell, Sr. My John Whetsell was a veteran of the War of 1812 and was a prosperous planter in lower Orangeburg District. his first wife was Anna Hill and his second wife was Margaret Hutto. I descend from John's son, Joel R. Whetsell, and from his other son, John Martin Whetsell. Joel R. Whetsell married Ann R. E. Bowman (his first cousin, daughter of George Bowman and Elizabeth Whetsell). I found some of my Whetsell info last night, it goes as following: John. J. Whetsell 15 Mar 1828 - 15 Mar 1863 ( I think he died serving in the Confederate Army) his wife was Elvira T. Carn 30 Dec 1829 - 17 July 1915 they were the parents of: 1. Leonora Whetsell 15 Apr 1850 - 31 Dec 1943 her husband, James R. Wannamaker 28 Jan 1840 - 30 Mar 1921 2. John Wesley Mouzon Whetsell 7 Dec 1852 - 2 March 1895 his wife, Elizabeth Augusta Collier 15 July 1857 - 22 Sept 1929. They were married 3 Feb 1876. 3. Laura E. Whetsell 15 May 1856 - 27 July 1890 her husband, I. S. Harley (no dates). I actually have pictures of Leonora & James Wannamaker and of Laura & I. S. Harley. There is a picture of Elvira T. Carn Whetsell as well, I have seen it. There may be one of J. W. M. Whetsell - let me do some checking. Elvira T. Carn was the daughter of Lewis D. & Lettie Murray Carn. James R. Wannamaker was the son of Peter and Ann Wannamaker. Elizabeth A. Collier was the daughter of John W. M & Caroline R. S. Shuler Collier. As for jacob Whetsell's children - all I can find in my records are: 1. John J. Whetsell 2. Elizabeth Whetsell 3. Joshua M. Whetsell 4. Sara Whetsell 5. Laura E. Whetsell 6. Renvy Whetsell Try looking for a document called the "Gavin Journal" - its a record kept by David Gavin of all the "goings on" of the area around Indian Field Church. It starts in the early 1800's and goes until after the War Between the States. Its a great source. Hope some of this helps you out....

Is there any proof that Jacob had these other children?...Sarah, Renvy, J. J...?? Does anyone know who their mother may have been? A Sarah is listed in the 1850 census as living with Ann D. Whetsell (2 years after Jacob's death), but Laura Emma was not. However, Laura Emma who married W. P. Dowling was the same age. Are they the same person? Is there some reason that someone would leave half of their children out of their will? His will only names: Ann D., his wife, then Joel Martin, John William, Harriet Ann Elizabeth, and Laura Emma, in that order. His wife along with Isaac M. Johnston and Elijah Brownlee are executors. Witnesses are Daniel Hutto, Thomas Peters, and Thomas J. Knight. Thanks for any ideas, Carolyn

Jacob had a brother John Whetsell who is my ancestor, they had a sister Elizabeth, who is also my ancestor. As far as any of us can find - they were the children of Martin Whetsell.
