Hi, I have some notes on some of the names you have mentioned. Are you sure she was a SMOAK and not a CARTER? I have a Mary E. (I believe E=Elizabeth) SMOAK b1814 to 1819 dau of Moses Smoak (abt 1788-1851). Her first husband (mar abt 1828) was James Hansford ("Hansford") Fender who lived abt 1810-1851. 2nd husband (mar abt 1852) was Thomas Giles Caldwell (Sr.) b abt 1779 Ireland, died 23 Mar 1863 in Colleton County, SC. More interesting for you are my notes on TG Caldwell, Sr: Buried in Carter's Ford Baptist Church, Lodge, Colleton, South Carolina. Tombstone: T. G. Caldwell, Sr.; Departed this Life; March 23, 1863; Age 84 years; (=> B. 1779). 1860 US Census, Barnwell, S.C. p361-B age 77 => B.1783. First wife was Elizabeth ? (may have been CARTER - see below & executors of will), b abt 1784, widow of Robert Miley, Sr who died in 1818. His executors included William Carter and George Carter. Son Thomas Giles CALDWELL, Jr.; Tombstone: 1825-1871; Husband. He is also buried in C.F.B.C. Son is age 50 in 1870 SC, Colleton, Broxton Twp page 64. Next to TGC Jr is Sarah Adeline Carter Caldwell; 1826 - 1871; Wife. From: Karen Newell Eitel [mailto:ekay@ncia.net] May 22, 2001 Subject: [SCCOLLET] THOMAS CALDWELL FAMILY Posted on: Colleton Co. I've been trying to link Paul (born 1804) and Peter (born 1805) for some time, but so far have not succeeded. Do you have a source that indicates they are brothers? Here is a summary of what I know about them. Paul Crosby is at Colleton County, South Carolina in the 1830 and 1840 censuses, specifically St. Bartholomew Parish in 1840. No Crosby is indexed at Lowndes County, Georgia before 1850, but Paul and his family are there in 1850. The ages and birthplaces of the Crosbys in Paul’s household suggest that the family arrived in Georgia about 1842. A Peter Crosby, born in South Carolina, appears in the Lowndes County, Georgia census of 1850, but not in 1840. He was born about 1805, and his wife Elizabeth was born in South Carolina about 1813. The birth dates and birth places of the Crosby children suggest that they moved to Georgia about 1835, but the ages and genders of the family members are inconsistent with the household of another Peter Crosby (born 1796) who is at Colleton County in 1830-1850.

They all state Bartholemew Parish. In the 1860 & 1870 records I find the following children: (01) Eliza, (02) Charles (03) Alice, (04) Margaret, (05) Samuel, (06) Samuel, (07) Julia, (08) Julia, (09) Anna & (10) Hester. In the 1880 census Caroline is shown as a widow. Apparently Andrew died in the 1870's. I was in Walterboro today and found the following in the microfilm files of the town newspaper. It referenced the death of a Mrs. Laura Henrietta Tucker. The article goes on to state that she was the daughter of A.J. & Caroline Lowry Smoak. So there appears that possibly there is one more sister. Laura Henrietta is my tie to the Smoak lineage.

I'm trying to find out if her maiden name was Smoak or if that was her 1st married name. I see my typo in my first message where I was trying to find out if possibly Luther Hughes married a daughter of [Henry Hughes] when I meant to say Henry Alexander Hyrne. I still have never found out how Luther Hughes and Henry Alexander Hyrne knew each other. I think I have a lead on Henry Alexander Hyrne's daughter, Annie marrying David Winter, but need a source.

The parish's southern boundary is the Edsito River, western boundary is the modenn Dorchestor County line {ST. George- Dorchester Parish}, its northern boundary is near the Stono River {St. Andrew's Parish), its eastern boundary is the Wadmalaw River. Modern US 17 passes through the middle of the parish, from the Colleton County line to about the southern boundary of the city of Charleston. Communities that are in it include Adam's Run, Ravenal, and Hollywood. The original Colleton County was founded in 1682 and included what are now modern Colleton County, most of Dorchester County, and the southern portion of Charleston County. In 1769, Colleton County was made part of Charleston District About 1800, Colleton District was formed out of Charleston District. Colleton District was the same area as the old Colleton County with the exception of most of the coastal islands which remained in Charleston District. In 1868, Colleton District became Colleton County. In 1897, the break up of Colleton County began with. the formation of Dorchester County. The Church Act of 1705 created the parishes. Two parishes were formed in Colleton County, St. Bartholomew's Parish which was the area south of the Edisto River and St. Paul's -Stono which was north of the Edisto. St. Paul's would be divided into smaller parishes and took its modern form prior to the American Revolution. What is now Colleton County is the area that was covered by St. Bartholomew Parish.
