    3. Sherry, I sure would be grateful to see the cemetery data online where people in far-flung places could look at it easily. Will you be putting it on your website anytime soon? Thanks, John in Austin, Texas. -----Original Message----- From: Sherry Cawley [mailto:sjacaw@lowcountry.com] Sent: Monday, March 22, 2004 10:08 PM To: SCCOLLET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCCOLLET] Cemeteries in Colleton County With so much talk about cemeteries in Colleton County, I'l like to let everyone know just where the Old St. Bartholomew Chapter is in their research. First, we are attempting to list all the known cemeteries in the county--even those that no longer have headstones. We have over 300 listed so far. You can check them out at our website: http://www.roostweb.com/~scosbc/ Remember that Colleton once included most of Dorchester County, all of Edisto Island, and part of Bamberg County. Except for about three on the list that are now in Bamberg County, all the rest are located in the boundaries of Colleton as it now stands. Second, most of Edisto Island is now part of Charleston County. We are not currently working on those cemeteries found on the Island. Third, we are working with the county 911 office to place cemeteries on a county map by townships. Then we will have specific directions to the majority of the cemeteries using current street and county road names. Fourth, We have identified a number of cemeteries that were not included in any of the previous publications. This will be corrected in the future when we update the cemeteries by the county townships instead of upper and lower imaginary county lines. Fifth, we are also working on a book of all those who served in the military and are buried in Colleton County. We now have over 1600 names and will probably add another 600 by the time we finish. Sixth, we are beginning projects to preserve some of the older cemeteries. We are now working with the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society on some of them. Our first project will be the Pon Pon Chapel of Ease Cemetery on Hwy 64 (Charleston Hwy). More on that later. If you know of a cemetery that is not on the list or one of your relatives served in the military and does not have a military marker, please contact us. They should be included in our projects. If you have any specific questions about any of these projects, please contact me at our email address: osbcscgc@yahoo.com Sherry Cawley, chapter president ==== SCCOLLET Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe: Send message addressed to SCCOLLET-L-request@rootsweb.com For Digest subscription, sent to SCCOLLET-D-request@rootsweb.com In the body of the message, enter only the word - unsubscribe ============================== Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. As mentioned the 1850 census shows James Appleby married to Mary Ann. In 1860 he is shown as J. P. Appleby, he was 62. Mary Ann was still living. Not sure what the "P" stood for. As mentioned, Dr. J. J. Stokes of Atlanta showed James Preston Appleby as the father of William Preston Appleby in HENRY STOKES OF COLLETON COUNTY. Not sure if Dr. Stokes reached that conclusion on his own or someone passed it own to him. Dr. Stokes also mentions my great grandfather Henry Allen Williams in his book. Henry served in Company G, 4th SC Cavalry. William Benjamin Risher was Henry's brother-in-law and also his first cousin once removed. J.J. Stokes indicates Henry and his wife Martha only had one child, a daughter named Sarah. There were actually 10 children including my grandfather Henry Bass Williams.

More than 10 years. Going on memory here, ca. 1874-1881, possibly more. Those were just the years I was particularly interested in. It was stated that someone "threw away a bunch of archives they didn't think were important". So if you don't find the names of your family in the index it doesn't mean they didn't have an obit, etc. it could be a missing paper. I don't know if the South Carolina Library in Columbia has these missing records but would be interested to know. -Bev

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ncB.2ACE/1466.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thank you for the information on the will of Amelia Ann Stokes Appleby. Over a year ago, it appeared to me that William Preston Appleby was a son of David and Amelia Stokes Appleby. On page 219 of SADDLE SOLDIERS is a letter written to Elizabeth Boulware Stokes by Capt. Appleby. He refers to Elizabeth as "My Dear Aunt," which seemed to confirm that Colonel Stokes was Appleby's uncle and that Amelia Stokes Appleby was the colonel's sister. It appeared to me this past summer that my conclusion about William Appleby being a son of David C. Appleby may have incorrect. DR. J. J. Stokes of Atlanta, Georgia in HENRY STOKES OF COLLETON COUNTY indciated that William Preston Appleby was a son of James Preston Appleby and his first wife. According to Dr. Stokes, James Appleby's second wife was Eleanor Stokes. I don't know the relationship of Eleanor to William Stokes and Amelia Stokes Appleby. William and Amelia did have a sister named Eleanor who was the first wife of Richard B. Spell. Eleanor was only 23 years old when she passed away in January 1852. Richard's second wife was Adaline Risher sister of Captain Joseph Koger Risher. After reading your posting, checked the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1850, David C. Appleby and Amelia A. Appleby are shown to have a son named Wm., age 14. Also, Sarah age 13 is shown. In 1850, James Appleby is shown married to Mary Ann and they had 4 children none was named William. In 1860, William Appleby aged 24, student, is shown in the household of D. C. Appleby and Amelia. James Appleby was listed as J. P. Appleby in 1860 and was still married to Mary A. Amelia Appleby's will and the 1850/1860 census indicate that William Preston Appleby was the son of David and Amelia Appleby. Over a year ago, I concluded that Sarah Appleby Risher, wife of Richard Risher, Jr. was a sister of William Appleby. Dr. J. J. Stokes' information would make one conclude that they were cousins but it appears his conclusion is incorrect.
