Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ncB.2ACE/1466.1.1.1.1.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: On page 75 of the book THE SMYLY FAMILY OF COLLETON COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA we learn that David Earle Appleby married Sophia Smyly on 22 January 1901 It is pointed out that David was a son of Captain William Preston Appleby and Anzly Capers Larisey. The index indicates over 20 Applebys are mentioned in the book. The author doesn't point out that William Preston Appleby commanded Company G, 4th SC Cavalry. At least three Smylys served under Capt. Appleby: John Smyly; Joseph Smyly, Jr., and Duncan Stewart Smyly. All three did not return home after the war. The author of THE SMYLY FAMILY is Mrs. Millie Warren Brunson of Orangeburg, SC, a cousin of Captain William P. Appleby. Bill's mother Amelia Stokes Appleby was a granddaughter of Benjamin Risher, Sr. and Mary Fontaine Risher. Mrs. Brunson is also a direct descendant of Benjamin and Mary through the marriage of Francis Fontaine Risher and Harriet Williams Risher. Francis and Harriet were frist cousins and grandchildren of Ben and Mary Risher. After the death of Francis, Harriet Williams Risher remarried, her second husband was George Warren. Mrs. Brunson is also a descendant of Harriet via that marriage. Needless to say besides being related to William P. Appleby, Mrs. Brunson is also related to Bill's sister Sarah Appleby. Sarah married her first cousin once removed, Richard Risher, Jr. Richard served under his cousin Capt. W. P. Appleby as a sergeant in Company G, 4th, SC Cavalry. Like the three Smylys mentioned above, Richard gave his life for his country and did not return home. After, the War Between the States, Sarah remarried. Sarah passed away on 30 June 1914 and her obituary appeared on page 5 of the 8 July 1914 issue of "The Press and Standard," The Walterboro, SC newspaper. Sarah's obituary follows: MRS SARAH O. STOKES DEAD / Passes away at Bramchville on the 30th of June Mrs. Sarah O, Stokes died at her home in Branchville on the evening of June 30th in the 77th year of her age. Her death was not unexpected as she had been an invalid for three years, at the same time coming as a distinct loss to her many friends and relatives. Mrs. Stokes was formerly Miss Sarah Appleby and was twice married, first to Richard Risher, of which union two children survive, J. R. Risher of Smoaks and R. F. Risher of Branchville. She was again married to J. A. Stokes and one daughter, Mrs. J. E. Byrd of Branchville survives her. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren of whom James F. Risher is one. For many years Mrs. Stokes was a member of Green Pond Methodist Church and she will be missed much from the good works of this church. The remains will be interred Wednsday afternoon in the Stokes Cemetery at Smoaks in the presence of a sorrowing concourse of relatives and friends. END OF OBITUARY The obituary indicates Sarah was laid to rest, "...in the Stokes Cemetery near Smoaks." My fiirst impression was this was the Stokes-Tucker/Williams Stokes Cemetery on SC 61 near the enterance of the Buck Head Hunting Club. However, the cemetery Sarah was buried in is also known as the Stokes-Byrd Cemtery and is in a different location. From what I can tell the Bryans do not mention the Stokes-Byrd Cemetery in their book CEMETERIES OF UPPER COLLETON COUNTY. Possibly it is a lost cemetery. The obituary names only one of Sarah's nineteen grandchildren, James F. Risher. James Franklin risher had graduated from the Citadel in 1911. From 1912 to 1914 he had served as a lieutenant in Company K, 3rs, South Carolina Infantry. His civilian occupation was school teacher and he taught for 11 years in Colleton County Public Schools. He would eventually teach at Carlisle military school in Bamberg, SC and became owner of the school in the 1930's. He would later become owner of Camden Military School. in Camden, SC

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ncB.2ACE/1482 Message Board Post: This message was posted on another forum. http://genforum.genealogy.com/burdge/messages/151.html Michael Burdge was a veteran of the American Revolution. Originally from New York, he came to South Carolina around 1790 as a Methodsit minister/circuit rider. Methodist records verify this. While in the area of modern Colleton County Michael purchased sone land near the Edisto River and married a Risher around 1791/1792. They had 4 or 5 daughters prior to the death of Michael's wife around 1800. The descendants of Michael and his wife identify her as Hannah Risher. About the only Hannah Risher most researchers show livng in that period was Hannah Cook Taylor, a widow who married Samuel Risher. Some show Samuel as a son of Benjamin Risher, Sr.. but descendants indicate they are not sure who Samuel's father was and that Samuel only had two siblings, sisters named Mary and Sarah. A Quick Claim Deed dated 31 October 1793 mentions John Risher deceased, his widow Sarah Risher, and sons Richard and Benjamin. In two places, it is indicated that the deed was witnessed by Michael Burdge and Eletha Burdge. More than likely Eletha was Michael's wife. Since Michael married after 1790 and apparently his wife passed away prior to the 1800 census, he is not shown as head of household in St. Bartholomew's Parish, SC. Benjamin Risher, Jr. was probably a cousin of Michael's wife. Ben, Jr. who was marreid to Mary Koger passed away in October, 1810 due to a fall from a horse. His death took place after the 1810 census was taken. Descendants of Ben Risher, Jr. indicate he was survived by his widow and three young sons. However, the 1810 census indciates that his household included 3 females, over 10 and under 16. Possibly these young ladies were Michael's daughters? After the death of his wife, Michael Burdge reentered the Methodsit ministry, but would again drop out. He is said to have eventually returned to New York with his children. Moichael's descendants are trying to learn who his wife's parents were.

    3. Hello all, I just signed up last night. My name is Jack Gray and I was born in Orangeburg. I do have direct kinship that were from the Walterboro area such as the Craven's, Colson's, and last year I found out about a branch of the Gray's, the Syfrett's. I don't have much on the Craven line, so I need to work more on that. Lately I have been looking for burial places of the Fralix's. Most have said they are buried in a Zion Cemetery in the Walterboro area, but that came up false, unless there is another Zion, (besides AME). Names include Mack Fralix (Robert Mack), Elizabeth Kinard Fralix. Joseph Aqulia Fralix, T.J. Fralix (Mack's father) was killed at Petersburg, but he may be buried there. T.J.'s wife's name was Mary, but I don't know her last name. Joseph Aquila is the one I've been trying to find anything on. I know his son Lewis and Joseph died when he was just 3 years old. he has nothing on his Dad and been searching for awhile. It hurts Lewis by not doing the "computer thing", as he calls it. So I thought I would help him. I have a few things now, but no burial place. It does list a Zion as a place of burial on his death certificate. Well, let you all go for now. Thanks to Pat Sabin for telling me about this board. Sincerely, Jack Gray, Fayetteville, N.C. http://jacksphoto.homestead.com/

B. Risher, Sr., Mrs. Mary Risher, aged eighty-eight years. She had been a member of the M.E. Church, South, for about seventy years. Old age had not dimmed her intellect or affected her natural senses, and better still, it had not soured her disposition or dampened her religious ardor. Instead it mellowed her, and she ripened as the years went by. Gentle, cheerful, pleasant in her intercourse with all, simple as a little child in her faith and trust in God. truly a mother in Israel is gone. We shall miss the benedictions of her presence. L.C. In my research, I ran across a Briton/Britton George who lived up in 96 district (Spartanburg) but he was born before 1800. Could he be any connection to your Lewis George family? Do you have any relationship to Capt. James George of Charleston, SC or to James George of the town of St. George in todays Dorchester county (was Colleton county) ? Regards, Robert Hughes

Perry Kinard was a farmer in Warren Township and was married to Sarah McCormick. Elizabeth Kinard married R.M. "Mack" Fralix and had Sara Ann (Lula); Aquilla; Shelley; Lessie; and Cassie Edgar. Cassie Edgar was my great-grandfather. Mack Fralix died when Cassie was 1 and Elizabeth married a Benton. ==== SCCOLLET Mailing List ==== Visit Colleton Co SCGenWeb - http://www.patsabin.com/colleton/ Post your Wills, Obits, Deeds, Pensions,Bible Records! http://www.patsabin.com/colleton/genconnect.htm ============================== Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. My understaning is that Sarah first married George W. Rizer and after his death married John Edmund Byrd. Sarah Byrd mentioned in the will was probably Sarah Stokes. Sarah's sister Lucy is said to have married J. W. S. Tucker. Not sure but Eliza Tucker may have been their daughter.

Julia seems to have died without husband, without children, and without a will. Her estate would therefore have gone to her brothers and sisters, but you say she had none. Next in line would be her parents, but they were both dead. After that comes the aunts and uncles. Thomas M. Appleby and R. Hiram Appleby would therefore be Julia's paternal uncles or sons thereof. Peter Stokes and William Stokes would be her maternal uncles or sons thereof. Ann C. Ott would probably be Julia's paternal aunt (Ann C. Appleby married Lewis Marion Ott in 1855). I don't know who Sarah Byrd and Eliza Tucker are, but they should fit in in a similar manner.
