    1. McKewn Surname
    2. Jim Lockhart
    3. Hello, I'm researching the McKewn surname. The earliest ancestor I can trace is William Talley McKewn, born abt. 1812; married Julia Ann Fordham. The 1860 SC census has the family in Orangeburg; but family stories indicate the family may have been in Colleton County prior to Orangeburg. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Harriette Lockhart

    1. Richardson
    2. I've been gone from the lists for a long time and wanted to ask if anyone here is researching the surname RICHARDSON. In particular, I am searching for Thomas Richardson born 1816. The family has always said Thomas was born in Charleston, but we've never been able to find any traces of him there. Even after hiring 2 professional researchers. One of those old family tales says he may have even changed his name to WATSON (first or last name??) after he got into some kind of trouble in "OLD SUMPTER" and he fled the area..... It's possible he has other male family members named James, John and maybe even Jacob or Francis. Just some clues. Does anyone have a stray Thomas Richardson born 1816 or so? Amy McCroskie

    1. Grimball, Robert, Adams, Stone, Carriere, Stoney, Jaudon
    2. Hi, First post to this list. I have some info on these families, but would like more! Can anyone tell me what kinds of records exist for Colleton Co? And does anyone have access to them? Can anyone tell me (or refer me to a site) about the early (1600s and 1700s) history of Edisto Island? Is Wadmalaw Island in Colleton? Was there a close relationship between Edisto and Santee? I have yet to find any of my ancestors on immigrant ship lists tho I am sure many of them (particularly the Santee bunch) were Huguenot refugees. Was Edisto a Huguenot settlement as well? Can anyone connect to these names? I'd be happy to fill in what details I do have if anyone can link... thanks! Cyndi in Baltimore

    1. Fw: Timmons Family, St. Bartholomews Parish
    2. Mary Timmons
    3. Hi, Thought I'd give this query another try, has been almost two years since the original posting so maybe someone has come across the name since then. I am trying to find information and/or descendants of the Timmons family consisting of three brothers, Thomas, Richard and George (born in Ireland to a Quaker family), and according to what few records I have found, all planters, residing with their families in St. Bartholomews Parish, Colleton County as early as the 1730's and possibly the mid 1720's. These boys were born to George Timmons son of Richard and Mary Turner daughter of Thomas Turner, all Quaker folk from the area of Lurgan, Co. Armagh, Ireland. The Will written in June of 1756 by Thomas who died February 1761, makes no reference to a wife or children of his own but does mention his eldest brother Richard and brother George (appears he may have resided with Thomas) and his three sons Thomas, George and John; brother John of Baltimore County near Joppa, Maryland and sister Sarah Gallery of Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland. Eldest brother Richard died October 1761, his Will drawn May 1760 mentions present wife Mary Ann and children (present and others) Thomas, John, Richard, Mary and Sarah. Also found amongst the Land Records of St. Bartholomew Parish 1764-1769, a Thomas, Elizabeth and Hannah Timmons but do not know for sure if these folks are somehow related. A plat map (1769) in which these folk are mention also refers to an area called "Timmons Swamp". Any clue, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated for beyond this point, with the exception of one possible military reference, we have not been able to locate the smallest tidbit regarding any of them. Thank you, George and Mary Timmons Md>Az

    3. Gloria, The last time I was in Walterboro ( long time ago) the man that owned toe John Deer Tractor Co. had a group of people cataloging Live Oak Cemetery. A lot of my relatives are buried there and the age dates of your family would correspond to those buried there, It might be a good idea to check US Genweb for Colloton Co and see if they can give you some information. 3. I am going to be going to SC in July to do some research and visit family cemeteries. I have found my great-grandmother buried in the Minus-Connor cemetery in Colleton County thanks to Lettye DuBois of this list. I am now trying to find where my grandfather might be buried. He was born in Colleton County about 1890 and died in Colleton County in 1933. The death certificate was signed by a doctor from St. George, the burial information is not filled in, but it says his place of death was Colleton County. His name was Floyd Samuel Crumpler, daughter of Emma Minus and Sam Crumpler. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might find out where he is buried? 2. Daryol and Rena Forinash
    3. My name is Rena Forinash. I am researching CROSBYS AND STANFIELDS in Colleton County. I have John CROSBY b. 1808 either in Scotland or Colleton County--it is unclear whether he or his father is the original immigrant. He m. abt. 1855, Rebecca Ellen STANFIELD b.c. 1834. They had one son, John Elias CROSBY born Feb 1856. According to family story, John E. was born after his father had died. I have been unable to corroborate this although Rebecca is shown as head of household in the 1860 Census for Lexington County, Saluda Twp. What is weird is that there are 2 girls ages 11 and 9 as well as John,4, listed with her. Dad may have been married before. If so, there should be some kind of record in orphan's court or something, right? Also in the household is Elizabeth Stanfield. What I need is any info about John or Rebecca. I have been unable to connect him to any of the prolific Crosby familys in Colleton County. I know that a bunch of them went to GA for awhile, but I have been unable to find him there either. HELP!!! please..... Thanks, Rena Forinash--frustrated in L.A., far away from SC rated in L.A., far away from SC

    3. Hi, I just subscribed to this list and need some help. My great-grandmother was born and died in Colleton County and I can't find any information about her or her family. I also will be coming there in July to try and so some research and would like some suggestions on the best places to do research. My great-grandmother was Emma Mimms, daughter of Edward Mimms. I do not have any more information, this came from my grandfather's death certificate and the 1890 census. Emma married Fleet Sam Crumpler and had two or three sons, Floyd S. Crumpler (my grandfather) and John S. Crumpler (listed on the 1890 census in the household of Edward Mimms). There may have been another son, Stanley, but I have not found him on any census indexes. My grandfather, Floyd Samuel Crumpler, was born in Colleton County abt. 1890 and died in Colleton County in 1933. During his lifetime, he lived in several other states, but for some reason, was living there when he died. I have obtained his death certificate. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have been searching for a year with no success. I live in Texas and do not have access to SC resources, as our libraries here have limited information on that area. Thank you, Gloria Crumpler Vester [email protected]
