I am also interested in this family. I haven't pinned it down, but living next door, the William Campbells must be close relatives of the Jesse Campbells. If I can see correctly, I believe there is a Martha in the JC household. I am hoping that if it is, she may be the Martha Campbell whose mother was the sister of O'Bryant Trisvant Canaday, and who (Martha) married Porter Jackson in the 1860's or early 1870's. Does anyone have any information on this family? Bettie Berry

South Carolina is a critical gen research State for millions of Americans, including African Americans. Scholars say more than 60% of living African Americans have at least 1 ancestor from SC. There are also SC genealogy ties from SC back to the Caribbean and back to England/Scotland, and to west Africa. That's why it was called the "triangle slave trade". I have found an 1870 census entry for ELLEN LOWNDES, age about 60, BLACK, born in SCOTLAND. There are lots of Black SC families now living in YORK, PENNSYLVANIA. It's a good place to check online phone listings for SC surnames. Researcher E. E. Vaughn has finished compiling her Black Cemeteries Book for RICHLAND COUNTY (Columbia) SC. Her book is 672 pages with over 16,000 entries. She advises Richland County Black marriages are found at the County Probate office. Earlier records are at the South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History (SCDAH), as well as old wills, probate, military, church records, census, bills of (slave) sale, etc. Death records from 1915 to 1949 are at the SCDAH. Re: Bernice Lacy's post on Saturday, 01 April 2000 Dear Bernice, Thanks for your post. In what city/county/district did you find your BROWN and JAKES family in the 1900 and 1920 Census? Which Colleton County JACQUES (JAKES, JAQUES) line are you searching? Are the families you're researching white or African American? I'm researching my white family with surname of JACQUES (JAKES, JAQUES)in Colleton County. Some of my JACQUES (JAKES, JAQUES) family moved to Georgia between 1880 and 1888. My Mary B. BROWN was born 1758 in North Carolina, daughter of Hugh BROWN and Mary BUIE who was born in Scotland. Mary B. BROWN married into my North Carolina FORT family (John FORT, b. 1762) and moved to Georgia around 1798. Mary Jacques in Montana [email protected]
Hi, In order to give more exposure to posts on the query board, I have set up GenConnect to forward them to the list. If you want to respond to an email that states > >Posted on: Colleton Co. My research on the PADGETT/PAGETT family focuses on the early parts of the 1700s as they had several connections to my DUBOIS/JUIN/JAUDON/DALLAS families. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about families after 1800, but maybe we'll connect someday. Elizabeth DuBois Russo Keith Merwin wrote: > > Posted on: Colleton Co.
