About a year ago I came across a web site in which you could enter the surname you are researching and the census year you are looking at, and a map would be displayed showing the frequency of distribution of that surname in the US at that time. Of course, I've cleaned out my favorites folder and no longer have the information! I've hunted for it, but get hits for either census records or general location maps.
