Aunt Ola's one of mine, so I thought this would be as good a time as any to add some family information here :) Ola was one of the middle children of Caldwell Baxter Gardner and Sarah Jane Purvis. Baxter & Janie's family is as follows: Jesse Gardner, b. 1899 d. 1899 Leonard C. Gardner, b. 1901 d. 1959 Eva Janet Gardner, b. 1903 d. 1980 Jesse Gardner, b. abt 1904 d. abt 1973 Ola Elizabeth Gardner, b. 1905 d. 2002 Lawrence Nelson Gardner, b. 1907 d. 1953 *** my direct line Mattie Lua Gardner - living Coit Wilson Gardner, b. 1912, d. 1914 Harold Baxter Gardner, b. 1914 d. 1990 Janie Purvis Gardner is the daughter of Stephen David Purvis and Effie Freeman. The family as follows: William John Purvis, b. 1866 d. 1918 Josephine Purvis, b. 1868 d. 1934 Sidney James Purvis, b. 1870 d. aft 1880 Alexander Milton "Sandy" Purvis, b. 1873 d. 1930 Sarah Jane "Janie" Purvis, b. 1875 d. 1946 ** my line :) Lilly Ann Purvis, b. 1878 d. 1932 Archie K. Purvis, b. 1881 d. 1882 Clarence D. Purvis, b. 1882 d. 1955 Rose Effie Purvis, b. & d. 1884 Baxter "Dixie" Gardner was the youngest son of John Nelson Gardner and Levicia Burr. Big family! Mary Margaret Gardner, b. 1853 d.? John Calhoun Gardner, b. 1854 d.? Jacob Newton Gardner, b. 1855 d.? Joseph Allen Gardner, b. 1857 d. 1919 Furman Wardlaw Gardner, b. 1861 d. 1941 Emma Lavicia Gardner, b. 1864 d. 1919 George Wellington Gardner, b. 1866 d. 1932 William Preston Gardner, b. 1869 d.? Mattie Jane Gardner, b. 1871 d.? Robert Clifton Gardner, b. 1873 d. 1948 Wade Hampton Gardner, b. 1875 d. 1948 Caldwell Baxter Gardner, b. 1876 d. 1967 Hattie Gardner, b. 1878 d. 1951 Vicey Burr was the second wife of John Nelson Gardner; his first wife was her sister, Mary Burr. It is known that John & Mary had two sons -- James Washington Gardner, b. 1846, and Thomas Jefferson Gardner, b. 1848. One of the Gardner mysteries would be, "What *really* happened to James and Thomas?" One set of family researchers says that both boys died in the war, leaving no descendants -- not impossible given their ages. They would have been 19 and 17 at the end of the war, so it's unlikely that they would have married and had children already, especially not Thomas. There *is* a record of a James Washington enlisting at Lynch's Creek at the age of 17; this James survived the war and was paroled at Greensboro NC in May 1865. I've been unable to locate any record of Thomas serving, however. There is a second theory. Census records show both a James and a Thomas Gardner living in Kershaw County after the war, both married and had children. While not necessarily proven, I think it's fairly obvious that the James that enlisted at Lynch's Creek is probably the James living in Kershaw after the war. But are these men the sons of John & Mary, or members of another Gardner family entirely, with only an coincidence of names? Any one have any proof either way? Angie
