    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] George Edward King
    2. Jim
    3. George Edward King was the son of James Wiley King, born 18 June, 1848 in Darlington County and died on 15 April, 1923. James was married to Sarah Elizabeth Watkins, born 10 Jan, 1839 and died 14 May 1913. Both are buried at Union Methodist Church in Chesterfield. This King family is that of Gillum King, b. 1783 in NC and wives Nancy Jowers and later Margaret Outlaw. Lots of detail can be found in the book "The King's Footprints" by Jill King Lyles, available thru the Old Darlington District Genealogical Society Library in Hartsville. You can order the book from them at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/7212/. If you need infomation sooner, I have the book. Hope this helps..... 1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] George Edward King of the Carolinas: King, Turnage, Neely, Lee, Huggins
    2. Tom Donnelly and Sharlotte Neely
    3. Hi, again, Let me run my ideas about the King family of the Carolinas by you, and I hope you will tell me if they make any sense or not. I have been trying and trying over decades to track down the origins of my paternal grandparents, Joseph Bowden Neely, Sr. and Nettie King Neely Riley. My Kings are an especially incredible mystery from the North Carolina/South Carolina border area. By 1920 my grandparents were living in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia where all their children and grandchildren were later born. Joe had his own business selling Indian motorcycles. When the couple left the Carolinas, they cut all family ties and resisted efforts by family to reestablish contact, even when Joe died, and Nettie was left to raise her 5-year-old son and infant son alone during the Depression. My grandparents seem to have intentionally distorted some aspects of their history. For example, my grandparents said they were from Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC when I have found out that Joe was from Bayboro, Horry County, SC. My grandmother told my father she was of French descent. She mentioned her brother Lonnie O. King and an unnamed sister who took her in when her mother died. Otherwise, she refused to answer any questions about herself or her huband's family. My uncle tells me that into the 1950s my grandmother received letters from a woman relative in Baltimore, Maryland but that my grandmother destroyed the letters and never wrote back. From my father's baby book, I know his grandparents were Joseph E. Neely and Sharlotte [Lee] Neely and Eddie and Margarett King. I have suspected that Eddie is George Edward King and that Margarett is Margaret Elizabeth Turnage King, both of Chesterfield County, SC. The names are right, as are the dates and locations. (Could Edward and Margaret's child, "Lanlee"/"Lawlee," be another name for "Lonnie"?) Plus, Margaret Elizabeth Turnage King died about the same time my grandmother spoke of her mother dying. One of Edward and Margaret's children was Pauline, a name my grandmother's brother, Lonnie King, also gave to one of his children. Edward King's remarriage after his first wife's death is the kind of thing that would have caused my grandmother to cut all ties with him. So here's what I know: (1) Eddie King (born around 1850-1870 probably in the Carolinas-death date unknown) married Margarett (maybe Marguerite) (maiden name unknown) (born around 1850-1870 probably in the Carolinas-death date unknown). One or both of them supposedly had French ancestry. They had at least three children: a son Lonnie O. King and two daughters, one named Nettie King Neely Riley, and another possibly named Pauline King (married name may have been Bailey). (2) With his first wife (Lizzie Huggins King) Lonnie O. King (1890-1931) had at least two children, Pauline King (married name unknown) and Rembert Lonzo King (1909-1969). By his second wife, Mary Margaret Chappell King (1896-1977), he had a daughter, Helen Chappell King Greene (born 1928), who married Jesse Lewis Greene (1923-2000). Rembert Lonzo King, who lived in the Marion and Dillon County, SC area, married Nina Lee Bristow, and they had at least two children, Ramona King (married name unknown) and Marion Douglas King (1928-1998). Marion Douglas King married Mina S. (maiden name unknown), and they had at least three children. Lonnie King lived in Saint Paul's, Robeson County, NC when he died in 1931 and is buried near Raeford, Hoke County, NC (2) Meanwhile, Lonnie O. King's sister, Nettie King (1896-1958), married Joseph Bowden Neely, Sr. (1888-1928), and they moved to Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. They had two sons who survived infancy, Joseph Bowden Neely, Jr. (1923-1974), my father, and James Robert Neely, Sr. (born 1927), my uncle. Joseph Bowden Neely, Jr. married Kathleen Bell Neely (born 1922), and they had one daughter, me. James Robert Neely, Sr. married Betty Douglas Neely (born 1927), and they had two sons. I have spent years tracking down just this little information. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I see that among the children of George Edward King and Margaret Elizabeth Turnage King there is a daughter named Pauline but no children named Lonnie or Nettie. Could "Lonnie" and "Nettie" be nicknames for some other names? Could some of the children (like Lonnie and Nettie) be missing from records? Thank you for any ideas or information. 2. In my response below to Mr. Rasco's post I completely forgot to mention that you should also click on Cheraw District when you get to the Summary Guide to County Records for a list of what is also available for Chesterfield County. Chesterfield District Chapter, SCGS will of course include the microfilm on this list in our Purchase Plan. As for Mr. Rasco's question about a Chesterfield District Chapter web site, the answer is yes, we do have plans for a web site and an online database sometime in the near future. These things take time and volunteers though and over the course of this past year we have been busy just trying to get the Research Library organized. Due to the efforts of our generous members we have already run completely out of space at our present location and therefore we are now busy with the business of acquiring a building of our own. More news to follow on this HUGE step just as soon as all this actually takes place. You can check this list yourself through the South Carolina Archives & History Center Website http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/homepage.htm click on Research and Genealogy then click on Guide to Collections then click on Summary Guide to Local Records then click on Summary Guide to County Records then click on Chesterfield County and there you are!

    2. Ms. Corey: I am not sure if this reply about a loose leaf page cemetery book was ment for me or someone else. I already own a set of Mr. James Pigg's Chesterfield County Cemetery Survey book as well as several of his other works. Your reply had the subject of the message I placed about the Availability of the Primary Records of Chesterfield County. If you were responding to me, thank you once again. I believe that you may have actually been responding to someone else regarding a question about a cemetery book by the late Ms. Marie Wiggins. If this is the case, please disregard this message. As usual, you are very Knowledgeable of the subject and a great asset to this list as well as The Chesterfield District Chapter SCGS. I appreciate your time and efforts in giving me and perhaps others a positive answer to my questions. If there is anything I can do for you, genealogically, from here in New Orleans, just let me know. Do you know if the Chesterfield District Chapter has any plans to have a web site and perhaps have online database posted to that site in the near future? Keep up the good work and good luck with all your genealogical projects. Merry Christmas to you and yours and have a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year. Sincerely, James R. Rasco Harvey, Louisiana

    2. As far as I know, this "book" is only available at certain libraries in three-ring binder form. The South Caroliniana Library lists it in their card catalog and the Chesterfield Branch of the Chesterfield County Library System has it. If it is available for purchase I have never heard about this.

    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] What primary records are available for Chesterfield County
    2. Chesterfield County is considered a "burnt county" because of actions taken by Federial Forces under General Sherman's occupation of the county in 1865. Especially the burning of the County Courthouse and it's records. The apparent non requirement of certain other records prior to the early 1900's or the poorly managed way county clerks and other county official maintained the county records presents a problem for those outside the state and county attemping to do genealogical research in the area. I have found that the State of South Carolina dose not use the same title describtions for their records as most of the other States do. Can someone who has a good working knowledge and has personally done genealogical research in Chesterfield County please give an outline of what is actually available at the County Courthouse or at the State Library and Archives in Columbia? Have any of the records been abstracted and where can these abstracts be found or purchased? Such records might include but not be limited to: A. Administrations of Estates 1. Accounts 2.
