My great-great grandmother Sarah Jane GRAVES PURVIS was married to William A. Purvis of Anson County. William & Sarah are listed in Anson Co. (1860-1870-1880). Living with William & Sarah in 1880 is Betsey Purvis with a daughter Mary J. Purvis. Sarah died in 30 Dec. 1893 and it looks as if William then married Betsey. Betsey is listed in 1900 census with daughter Ella, William is not listed. Betsey sells land in 1900 that William and Sarah purchased. William died after Sept 1899 in Anson Co., date unknown but not listed in 1900 census. Signed a land deed in Sept 1899. William & Sarah had one child a son named William James Purvis born 25 Sept 1863. After 28 years still haven't positively determined who Sarah Jane GRAVES PARENT'S are?. Sarah Jane, age 16 was living with her mother or grandmother MARY, age 55, in 1850 Chesterfield Co. census. Also in household are David, age 32 & Thomas GRAVES, age 14. I now believe that David W. GRAVES and an unknown wife were the parents of Sarah Jane GRAVES. William Thomas GRAVES , age 14 in 1850, born about May 1838 married Mary Gilly Lassiter on 26 July 1857. Something happen and by 1859 William Thomas had married Mary F. Gainey. They had two children, Clarinda and Nancy Jane. Clarinda married Christopher Wesley Teal. I have no information on Nancy Jane David W. Graves married Mary Anne Gulledge (believed to be 2nd wife). They had 4 children - Annie Jane, Margaret H.; Daniel G.; Archibald James Graves. Annie Jane living with Brother Archibald James through 1920 - Never Married Margaret H. living with Brother Archibald James through 1920 - Never Married Daniel G. married Ula HOLLEY Archibald James in census with sister through 1920, Never married Mary Gainey GRAVES is also living with Archibald James and she dies 25 April 1921. Her husband David W. Graves died 21 Nov. 1898. David's brother Thomas(1820) married Eliza "Mollie" Rivers. They had 4 children - Mary Ann, Eliza and Martha Jane. Thomas died in the civil war on 19 Oct 1862 at Winchester, VA. Mary Ann married William F. Rivers (died in Civil War) then Ferguson Hale SMITH. Eliza , Listed 1850 census, no other info. Martha Jane married Elisha B. SMITH and had a large family. Then we have Mary Ann GRAVES, born abt 1825 married to Andrew Jackson Wallace. Also, Sarah Rebecca GRAVES, born about 1819, married Jefferson Belk. Who was Mary Graves Husband? Who was David W. Graves's first wife? Are Sarah Jane, age 16 in 1850 and Thomas age 14, in fact David's children as I have them presented? Who were the parents of Eliza Mollie RIVERS? Were David W. (22 Jan 1812); Sarah Rebecca (1819); Thomas (1820) and Mary Ann (1825) all siblings and sons and daughters of Mary Graves, age 55 of the 1850 Census. If you can help with any of the family names mentioned in this lengthy posting please contact me personally. I may have made some mistakes but I have sources to back up most of the data posted and collaboration from family members on some of the data. Charlie

Do you happen to have any additional information on Samuel Parker or Hannah Lee's families? Or leads to where I might find more information? I believe that Samuel Parker's parent is Hawley Parker per the 1850 Chesterfield County Census. I am trying to determine whether the child of Hawley Parker, also named Hawley and listed in the 1850 census as male, might actually be female and the Hawley who shows up in the 1860 census as a female m. to James Lee, living next door to William and Elizabeth Lee. Per the 1850 census, William and Elizabeth Lee appear to be Hannah's parents. I came across a genforum posting indicating that the Hawley m. to James Lee was indeed Samuel's (sister?) Hawley Parker. It seems an awfully big coincidence for the name Hawley in a place the size of Chesterfield County SC. I have also seen a possibility that a Hawley (surname unknown) was the wife of George A Parker Jr., son of George A. Parker and Easter Brock. Now this is a family tree posted on the web with no documentation, so I take it with several grains of salt, but wondered, especially in conjunction with the question above, if the census taker just wrote this one down wrong? If Hawley was female, it would be more consistent with a daughter being named Hawley and the fact that there was no occupation listed for the Hawley Parker parent of Samuel. Since the 1850 census is the first to list all family names, this question becomes even more important as I try to determine the name of the head of household to search for. (the youngest child listed in the 1850 census was age two so both spouses should have been alive in 1840). I didn't find a Hawley Parker in the 1860 census for Chesterfield Co. which leads me to the following possibilities: Hawley died; Hawley moved out of Chesterfield Co.! ; Hawley was really female and remarried someone in Chesterfield Co.(though a little less likely as I tried to find anyone with the first name Hawley and only came up the the Hawley m. James Lee who is *much* too young). Actually the Hawley child of Hawley Parker question is a puzzle to me, but not in direct line. I am comfortable with Hawley Parker b. abt 1802 in SC as Samuel Parker's parent (though I need to find out if I should list as mother or father), but am trying to find the name of the spouse, and of this Hawley's family. Thanks, Karen Dutton (kdutton@carolina.rr.com)
Dear Patsy: Benjamin T. sometimes known as Thomas Benjamin Teal was the child of Eliza A. (Davis) and Benjamin F. Teal. Eliza was his mother, not his wife. Thomas Benjamin was born September 1, 1847 and died in 1912. According to my records, Thomas Benjamin Teal married Julia Elizabeth Davis about 1865. He had sixteen children with Julia. I do not have a second wife listed for him. Clarajane Teal Goux

At the time of her death she was a widow. Her husband had apparently died before her. Her father is not listed on her death certificate but her mother was given as a Cross. She was buried in the Bethesda Cemetery. Informant was J. S. Campbell. Thomas H. Roscoe, the son of Riley Roscoe, death certificate states that his father was Riley Roscoe and his mother was Julia Cross. Thomas H. Roscoe married Annie Roscoe the daughter of Oliver Roscoe. The 1880 census list them as cousins. Since these death certificate comfirm that Isabella's mother was a Cross and her brother's mother was Julia Cross, and it appears that Isabella ( the daughter) always lived in William Riley Roscoe household, Is Isabella (the daughter) and Isabella (the 2nd wife and mother of William Riley Roscoe's younger children) one and the same persons????????? I need proof of who the parents of OLIVER ROSCOE were and the exact dates of his birth and death. Oliver first appears in the Chesterfield censuses in 1850, page 122, dwelling # 368, family # 368 as follows: Oliver Roscow 26 M W Laborer S.C. Caroline Roscow 18 F W S.C. Mindu Roscow 60 F W S.C. Rachel Roscow 17 F W S.C. It is believed that Caroline was his wife and her maiden sur-name was Steen or Stean. From info in the 1900 census, they were married about 1844. It is believed that Mindu or Minda is the mother of Oliver but have not found proof of this. If She is his mother, Rachel is assumed to be a sister. The 1860 census of Chesterfield County list the household of Oliver as follows: Cheraw P.O., page 99, dwelling # 70, family # 70 Oliver Rasco 31 M W Cooper S.C. Caroline Rasco 25 F W S.C. Annie Rasco 08 F W S.C. Catherine Rasco 04 F W S.C. James Rasco 03 M W S.C. Alex Rasco 01 M W. S.C. The 1870 census of Chesterfiel County list Oliver's household as follows: Cole Hill, written page 8, stamped page 282, dwelling # 92, family # 92 Oliver Rasco 35 M W Cooper S.C. It is believed that Doctor's full name was William Doctor Roscoe a/k/a "Dock" Jackson's full name was Alexander Jackson Roscoe. Nannie is probably Nancy although the daughter Annie is sometimes listed as Nannie. Bidely ( spelling not clear on census) may be a short form of Obediance. Katie is no doubt Catherine or Katherine. Dink is Katie's daughter not Oliver's. The 1900 census of Chesterfield County has Oliver's household listed as follows: Cole Hill, sheet # 11, dwelling # 215, family # 216 Oliver Roscoe H W M 3 24 76 m 56 SC SC SC Cooper Caroline Roscoe W W F 10 28 72 m 56 4 4 SC SC SC Keeping house Mack Roscoe S W M 8 73 26 s SC SC SC RR Laborer Catherine Roscoe D W F 6 96 3 s SC SC SC Although the 1900 census indicates that Caroline has had only four children and all four were still living, the records shows that Oliver had the following children: 1. Annie Roscoe a/k/a "nannie" born 26 Aug. 1854, died July 31, 1921 buried at Bethesda Methodist Church Cemetery. Married her cousin, Thomas H. Roscoe about 1880. 2. Catherine Roscoe born about 1857. May have married a Bryant. NFI 3. James "Jim" Roscoe born 27 Feb. 1856, died 30 August 1923. Married Annazilla Gulledge about 1884. 4. Alexander Jackson Roscoe born about 1859 NFI 5. William Doctor Roscoe born 8 August 1864, died 1 Dec. 1928. Married Rachel Bowen (Boan or Bone) about 1890-92. Both are buried at Bethesda Cemetery. 6. Nancy Roscoe born about 1867 NFI 7. Beedie (sp) Roscoe born about 1869. 2nd marriage to John W. Crowley. NFI 8. Mack or Mark C. Roscoe born August 14, 1874, died March 23, 1943. Married about 1904 to Nancy Brown. Any help in identifying Oliver Roscoe's parents and other siblings and his exact dates of birth and death would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. James R. Rasco

It is known that John & Mary had two sons -- James Washington Gardner, b. 1846, and Thomas Jefferson Gardner, b. 1848. One of the Gardner mysteries would be, "What *really* happened to James and Thomas?" One set of family researchers says that both boys died in the war, leaving no descendants -- not impossible given their ages. They would have been 19 and 17 at the end of the war, so it's unlikely that they would have married and had children already, especially not Thomas. There *is* a record of a James Washington enlisting at Lynch's Creek at the age of 17; this James survived the war and was paroled at Greensboro NC in May 1865. I've been unable to locate any record of Thomas serving, however. There is a second theory. Census records show both a James and a Thomas Gardner living in Kershaw County after the war, both married and had children. While not necessarily proven, I think it's fairly obvious that the James that enlisted at Lynch's Creek is probably the James living in Kershaw after the war. But are these men the sons of John & Mary, or members of another Gardner family entirely, with only an coincidence of names? Any one have any proof either way? Angie
My thanks for the information on the All-in-one Tree was intended for another list. You can stop scratching your heads now :) Sorry Bill Therrell
