    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] Re: ..... stop viruses.
    2. Bobbi
    3. Hey Jane and Listers, I was a little concerned about the advice for the anti-worm procedure, so I asked my "resident computer geek" (my husband). This is his reply. Also, I agree with Joanne Harley. The best thing to do is get Norton or it's equivalent and keep it updated. Good luck. Bobbi If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected. I don't think so. Most programming languages allow an error exception procedure that will fix/ignore or just skip the problem. In Visual Basic the statement On Error Resume Next would just skip the bad address and go on. Or if the worm writer has any degree of knowledge he/she will check each address the see if at least it is in the proper form. Besides, what if the worm picks random addresses from your book or starts at the back? If everybody you know does this then you needn't ever worry about opening mail from friends. Bad advice. Gives you a false and possibly fatal sense of security.

    2. Joanne Harley
    3. The first time I was sent a virus, I had to pay someone to come out and de-bug me. The cost was enormous. He suggested I buy the Norton Anti-virus for "E-Mail", specifically, which is where most viruses come in anyway. Once a year, I purchase the new version, which has automatic updates, and whenever a virus comes in now, my system takes care of it. No more worries. And, it also checks each one of my emails going out. It is the best investment I make all year long. Joanne H. NC

    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] Good idea how to stop viruses
    2. Jane Foley
    3. I got this from another list and I thought you might like it too. I learned a computer trick today that's really ingenious in its simplicity. As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book and sends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends and associates. This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm has gotten into your system. Here's what you do - 1) Open your address book and click on "new contact" just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. 2) In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in !000 (that's an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros). 3) In the window below where it prompts you to enter the new email address, type in WormAlert. Then complete everything by clicking add, enter, ok, etc. (In AOL mine worked under first name, !000 WormAlert) Now, here's what you've done and why it works. The "name" !000 will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered (WormAlert). If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected. Here's the second great advantage of this method. If an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your InBox almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it! Pretty slick huh? If everybody you know does this then you needn't ever worry about opening mail from friends.

    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] KNIGHT KNIGHT, NIGHT KNIGHT, NIGHT NIGHT
    2. Joanne Harley
    3. The only Knight I have listed on my family charts is in some notes of my ancestors as follows: 1788:Daniel & Sarah Hicks, 1788, By Virture of a Writ of Summons to you directed and herewith showed unto you, you are personally to be and appear before the Justices of our County Court of Marlborough to be held at Gardners bluff on the first Monday in Sept. next in order to testify according to your knowledge the truth in a certain cause now depending then and these to be tried Between Moses Knight Plaintiff, and Andrew Gibson Defendant on the part and behalf of the said Defendant, herein fail not on pain of the penalties that will fall thereon at will as the forfiture of ten pounds proclamation paid of office this fourteenth day of July in the year of our Lord, One thousand seven hundred and eighty Eight. 1788:To the Sheriff of Chesterfield Co.,SC, August 25, 1788, I do certify that I have summoned the within named Daniel Hicks and Sarah his wife to be and appear at the time and place within mentioned. Signed: Allen Chapman, Sheriff -------------------------------- Have you checked Richmond Co.NC? I have a few books of that county's records, recently published, and those names featured are : ARCHILAUS KNIGHT-1810, ELIZABETH AND AARON KNIGHT, MOSES KNIGHT, -1811, AGNES KNIGHT-1825, DAVID KNIGHT, ADMINISTRATOR OF HER ESTATE. BENJAMIN KNIGHT--1829, SARAH KNIGHT, (SAME YEAR, MAY BE WIFE) both deceased, estate being administered by John Knight, Francis Knight, and John C. Knight. Then James Knight, 1864, mentions inventory of the estate of the late James L. Knight. as returned by John C. Knight, then John C. Knight, 1915 mentions Augustus C. Knight of Greer Co., Oklahoma , heirs of W.R. Knight, deceased. Finally , another meniton of Sarah Knight--1829. Being from so far away, you may not realize that our early families continuuously moved back and forth between Richmond Co.,NC, Chesterfield Co., and Marlboro Co.,SC. I had several relatives who had farm land in at least two counties most of the time. There was very little between the counties to seperate them in those early years, and the map makers were not even sure the surveys had been done accurately. They were forever redoing the state lines.. I hope some of this helps. Sorry it could not be more. Joanne H. NC
