    1. Re: [SCCHESTERFIELD] Well!
    2. Hi James and other 100 plus members- My guess is that most of you are doing actual research in the courthouses, archives, libraries, and other repositories. I know that we have been very busy at the new location of the Chesterfield Genealogical Research Library. I also know that I am very behind in posting the Cheraw Chronicle/Chesterfield Advertiser Obituaries to this list and I apologize, but I am very behind in everything right now because the research library is so busy. It is not that I think one is more important than the other, but my duties and responsibilities are with the Chesterfield District Chapter, S.C.G.S. and the Chesterfield Genealogical Research Library. Our hours here are Monday 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Friday 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.; Saturday by chance or by appointment; and the second Sunday of each month (our Genealogy Meeting date) except for the months of May, July, and December. I volunteer on Tuesday through Thursday and other members volunteer on Monday and Friday. While at the library I am constantly busy with Chesterfield District Chapter business (sending "Welcome" packets to members, updating the membership list, forwarding these updates to the S.C.G.S. Treasurer, arranging speakers for our meetings, writing "Thank-You" notes, answering chapter email, and compiling our quarterly newletter, The Chesterfield District Chronicle). But, when researchers come in I stop what I am doing and help them however I possibly can with their research. If I ever get caught up I will get back to the arranging of the donations of materials (by our most generous members) to our library and purchasing other materials with their donations of $$$. Just in the past two weeks we have had members from Colorado, Ohio, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, and of course South Carolina in to do their family research. Actually, I am so busy helping others with their family research that I do not have time to do my own anymore, but that's okay. I think this is so much more important and I enjoy every minute of it!! One of these days I will get back to my own family research and I will be returning to the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research at Samford University in Birmingham, AL for the third year so that I can learn how to better help all of YOU when you get the chance to come into the Chesterfield Genealogical Research Library to do YOUR family research. 1. Re: [SCCHESTERFIELD] Well!
    2. Elizabeth Chancellor
    3. Personally, I'm still hitting brick walls, but I'll try again to see if anyone can help me with the following murder mystery. I am trying to find some information concerning two individuals who could possibly be my great-great grandfather and his brother who were possibly involved in a murder in Chesterfield County in the early 1800's. Because the courthouse in Chesterfield was burned in 1865 many records that may solve this mystery have been lost. I am looking for ANY leads! Here is what we know: (From South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia, SC General Assembly Acct. General, 1814, #2, 2 Nov 1814, Benj. Outlaw) 1811 February To Benjamin Outlaw To [for] Garding [guarding] William and Jerimiah Chanceller on a charge of murder being of by Constable William Betts To the Court or of the District of Chesterfield which is twenty five miles and then further by said William Betts who then was deputized by the Sheriff [of] said District to cari [carry] the said Jeremiah and Gilliam Chanceller before his honour [honor] Joseph Brevard in Camden, Kershaw District which is fifty three miles and from thence back to Chesterfield District by order of Judge Brevard before James Blak[e] the Justices of Quoroin to be Bailed which is 28 miles in the whole eight days at 100 [$1.00?] per Day_______ $ 8 April To atten[d]ing Court two Days in behalf of the State against the said William and Jerimiah Chancellor on the said charge being bound by recognizance 2 November To two days attendance 2, 1812 2 April term To two days attendance 2 ____ $14 No. 221 Benj. Outlaw Guarding Pris[oners]., etc. $14, Not allowed by law.6; $8. Judge Brevards order should be produced. --->> Note: I have not identified this Benjamin Outlaw, but there were several in the census records for 1790, 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 in Chesterfield and Darlington Districts of South Carolina. Were these two men the ones who were in the 1790 census for Cheraws District and in the 1800 and 1810 census for Chesterfield District? They were not in the 1820 census. Was Jeremiah the one who, according to descendants, was born in 1760 in South Carolina; was in Alabama in 1818 and died in 1831 in Autauga County, Alabama? Was William, my ancestor who drew land in Monroe County, Georgia in the land lottery of 1822, the William Chancellor of the 'murder mystery'? Or was it his father? Or was there no connection? My William Chancellor, Sr. was in Washington County, Georgia in the 1820 census, his age given as under 45, which would have made him being born no later than 1775. However, the 1830 census for Monroe County lists him as Head of the Household, age between 40 and 50, making him born between 1780 and 1790. (We know the enumerators were not too careful about listing a person's age, so this is open for debate) If anyone can shed ANY light at all on this "Murder Mystery" I would love to hear from you. Surnames: Teal Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mcB.2ACE/174 Message Board Post: I am seeking info on John and Rose Anne Teal. I believe John was from North Carolina and Rose Anne from South Carolina. John was born in 1858 died 1913. Rose Anne was born 1853 died 1907. It is believed that Rose Anne is of Native American descent. Her maiden name on the Marriage Certificate is illegible but appears to be "Hotou". Due to the script, age, and creases we cannot be much clearer. They were married in 1876 by Thomas Hardison at what we believe to be the home of Bill (William) Gaddy. Their children were Mary Ellen, Thatus Estell, Charley Benjamin, Ilen Levstus, Miner Ely (my ggfather), Vola Jane, Almer Audrey, and Robert Vassar. All names are correct to the best of my knowledge, but are not necessarily accurate. Any help on the parents of John or Rose Anne would be appreciated.

    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] Rebecca Roscoe
    2. Rebecca Roscoe, aks Rebecca Rasco, died February 8, 1923 and was buried in an unmarked grave at Bethesda Methodist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield County S.C. Her death certificate states that she was a resident of Cole Hill Township and that she was born in 1843. At the time of her death, she was single and residing in her home. Her death certificate also identifies her mother as being Jane Roscoe of S.C. The information on her death certificate was provided by T. P. Gulledge. Rebecca appears in all censuses of Chesterfield County from 1860 through 1920. Her age recorded on these censuses is not consistant from decade to decade and could have her born anywhere between 1825 and 1845. The censuses never shows an adult man in her household and nearly all of the censuses indicates that she was always single. Never the less she had four known children: Margaret "Maggie" Roscoe, born about 1856-58 died after 1880; Josephine Roscoe, born about 1857, died before 1870; William Joseph Rascoe, born October 1, 1868, died June 3, 1930; and Virginia Jane "Jennie" Roscoe born October 28, 1874 and died either July 12, 1956 or December 7, 1956. None of the daughters of Rebecca's appears to have married however the oldest daughter, Margaret, appears to have been the mother of at least two children, Ann Elizabeth Roscoe and Archie Roscoe. Ann Elizabeth Roscoe was born October 27, 1874 and died January 16, 1966. Ann had a daughter, Maggie Roscoe, apparently out of wedlock, on August 15, 1901. Later Ann Elizabeth, also called "Lizzie" married Isaac Donahue on September 4, 1920 and may have had four or five other children. Ann's daughter married Arlee Wallace. Undocumented and unproven family traditions say the Rebecca Roscoe was a sister of Joseph Franklin Roscoe (1843 - March 24, 1917) of Chesterfield County and a daughter of an unknown Roscoe female and an Indian man named Joe Johnson. I have found circumstantial evidence which indicates that Rebecca may have been a daughter of a Jane Roscoe and and unknown father with the sur-name of Minder. It is believed that Rebecca was a grandaughter of a Minda Rasco and a niece of Oliver and Riley Roscoe of Chesterfield County. The 1860 census list Rebecca's race and that of her two daughter, Margaret and Josephine as Mulatto. Later censuses list them as being white. When Rebecca's son, William Joseph Rascoe married Catherine Parker aks "Kitty Purvis", in April of 1887, they were charged with the crime of "Intermarriage of Races", Catherine being white and William Joseph being alleged to be of another race. Can anyone on this list prove or disprove any of the above or add anything else? Can anyone prove who the father of Rebecca Roscoe was and who the father or fathers of Rebecca's children was? I am also seeking information on any and all Roscoe or Rascoe families especially those that were in the Chesterfield, Marlboro, Darlington, Richmond, and Anson County areas prior to 1850. Any help would be appreciated. James R. Rasco

    1. [SCCHESTERFIELD] McBryde/McBride researchers might find this interesting!

    3. Charlotte Observer Sun, Apr. 14, 2002 RUBY, S.C. - 40 acres filled with love and sorrow RUBY, S.C. -- Thomas McBride still dreams of his grandparents' lantern-lit homestead in Chesterfield County and how he would walk a honeysuckle-laden path for a bucket of the sweetest spring water that's ever crossed his lips. He also remembers cotton fields stretching to the horizon and long rows filled with his kinfolk dragging bags of the white fluff equal to their own body weight. For three generations, McBride's ancestors worked these fields about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, first as slaves and later as sharecroppers. McBride recalls elders pointing out lynching trees in the half-light of a summer evening and a county road that blacks were forbidden to cross after sundown. McBride's memories are primarily from summer vacations in the late 1940s and '50s when he would come back and visit his S.C. relatives. It's been a half-century since McBride last walked his grandparents' path to retrieve the holy water of his homeland; still, his thirst has never abated for this haunted landscape. McBride, a 65-year-old Denver businessman, is one of the fortunate ones able to come full circle in this life -- both geographically and in his heart. He and his wife, Dorothy, recently completed a transcontinental quest by purchasing 40 acres of the former 1,000-acre plantation where his ancestors started working more than a century ago. The McBrides are likely to remain living in Colorado, where their four grown children reside. He's not sure what to do with his $50,000 S.C. property: perhaps a creekside park named in honor of his grandparents, Daisy and Marshall McBride. Or maybe a small manufacturing plant to bring jobs to this ghost town that peaked just after World War II. For the rest of the story, go to http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/living/3060856.htm

Surnames: Threatt, Funderburke, Hough, Arant, Melton, Munn, Classification: Military Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mcB.2ACE/172 Message Board Post: Monroe Journal, (Union County, NC) Fall 1947 (exact date unknown) "Praise for soldier now long dead - Mrs. Edna V. Funderburke of Dudley, S.C., who used to write for the Monroe Journal, wrote an article in 1915 about a Confederate soldier, John W. Threatt, who had just died. The article is republished as follows: All deaths are sad but we attended a burial on last Sunday afternoon that touched our hearts in a way not common to all such occasions. Mr. John Wilson Threatt was born in the northern part of Chesterfield County (S.C.) on March 24, 1836, died July 9, 1915, and was buried July 11th at Zoar church. The war record of Mr. Threatt is peculiarly interesting. If there ever was a man who laid his life on the alter of sacrifice for our beautiful Southland without expecting any reward, that man was John W. Threatt. He didn’t possess a foot of land, he never owned a slave, and I reckon he never expected to own one, but when the call came for volunteers, he forgot everything and fought for the land that he called home as bravely and as heroically as did the man who had his thousands at stake. At the beginning of the War between the States, he enlisted in Company 3, 8th South Carolina Regiment, under Captain M. J. Hough at Florence. He was in the following battles: both battles of Manassas, Gettysburg, Leesburg, Lynchburg, Petersburg, Harper’s Ferry, Cold Harbor, Gravel Hill, Deep Bottom, Spotsylvania, Battle of the Wilderness, Seven Days Fight around Richmond, and in an encounter near the Armstrong house in Virginia, where he was shot in the face. There was one occasion that proved the mettle of which he was made and showed him to be one of the bravest of the brave. It was Berryville, Virginia. The flag was in the hands of Aaron Plyler when a Yankee shot broke his wrist, but the flag did not fall. Just as it was halfway down, John W. Threatt caught it, and rushed up to where the shot was raining down like hail stones, and shouted, “Rally to your flag, boys, follow your colors!” Follow them they did, and captured the Yankee breastworks, putting them to flight. There were 18 holes through that flag in 15 minutes, as was learned afterward by actual count. At the war’s beginning, his regiment numbered 1,350 but it was reduced to 107. Threatt was married March 11, 1862, to Miss Emiline Arant, who died 42 years afterward, leaving a son, J. S. Threatt, of Belleville, Georgia, one daughter, Mrs. Minor Melton of Union County. He married a second time to Miss Rebecca Munn, who, with his children, survive him. He joined the Methodist Church in 1866 and Died in the Christian Faith. The following Confederate veterans attended the burial, the first seven acting as pallbearers: W.H. Funderburke, J.M. Funderburke, Willie Jenkins, Moses Horne, Elic Osborne, H.H. West, James Cox, V.T. Chears, and Thomas Rorie. As we stood there and saw those old soldiers place the still, cold form of their comrade beneath the sod, we did not wonder at the tears they shed as they thought of the hard days, and the dreary nights they had spent together away from home and loved ones in their fight for “The Lost Cause.” We believe that if ever a man deserved a monument erected to his memory, J.W. Threatt was one of them, and some sweet day, when the Hills of Heaven shall bear on our sight, we expect to see the brave true spirit of John W. Threatt there resting in the light and the love of the God who never forgets." I'm not researching this family but hoped this would help someone else!

Davis was listed as “Louis B. Davis” on the 1900 census of Chesterfield Co, SC, in Court House township. The census states that he was born June 1857 in SC. His wife was named Barzilla, and she was born July 1864 in SC. They had been married 22 years and had a houseful of children.]
