I read the link to Godey's Lady's book, Heroic Women of the Revolution, the story quoted here is identical to the story in Women of the American Revolution, Vol 3, pg 227-228. With one exception Godey's says David Elliot and the other says Daniel Elliot. From The Bulletin, Chester District Geneaological Society newsletter, I have a mention of a Margaret Elliot marrying a Charles Orr, also a John Alexander Douglas became indebted to Ebeneezer Elliot as administrator of the goods and chattels of William Elliot, dec. and finally it states there is an old book "Confessions of Faith" by was old and owned by Ebenezzer Elliot, one of the first Elders of the A.R.P. Church at Union. One may be able to find more at the Union A.R.P.church near Richburg. I have a lot of Elizabeth Fergusons in my database, but no one married to a Elliot.
