Descendants of George EMERSONand Esther ROBINSON invite families with connections in North Alabama, North Mississippi, and Southern Tennessee, to attend a meeting to learn more about our ancestors. We believe that our ancestors, George EMERSON/EMBERSON and Esther ROB*SON (variations include Robinson, Roberson, Robertson, etc.), came from Virginia/South Carolina through Tennessee and into Alabama. Various branches or connections of this family also migrated to counties in Mississippi, including Itawamba and Tishomingo counties. This movement is consistent with migration patterns of the time. More About George and Esther Emerson: - George Emerson/Emberson was born in Virginia, and there are contemporary Embersons listed in various genealogies for Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and other states, but no definite connections have been made. - Esther Rob*son was born in SC, and several possibilities for origins of Emberson and Robinson families in South Carolina exist (that is, with an 1800 census listing both Emberson and Rob*son families), most notably in Kershaw, Chester, Spartanburg, Lancaster, and Pendleton Districts/Counties. - We have some evidence that Esther's father was John Rob*son, of which there are several throughout the census records. George and Esther's second son was named John Robinson Emerson, and the first son was named William Emerson, leading us to believe that they might have used Scots/Irish naming patterns in the family. If that is the case, then the William Emberson and John Robinson families listed in the 1800 Kershaw County, SC, census may be our best clue. - We have some word-of-mouth evidence that George and Esther lived in Franklin County, Tennessee, before coming to Alabama. The name "Emerson" appears rarely in early Franklin County, Tennessee, records, but there are two Embersons (John and James) and one Emburson (George) listed in the 1812 Tax List. A William Emberson is listed in "Franklin County Men in the Indian Wars." - In the 1830 and 1850 censuses, George and Esther are in Lawrence County, Alabama. - Sometime before 1860, George and Esther moved from Lawrence County to Marion County, Alabama, in the Shottsville area. - Several members of both the Emerson and Robinson families migrated to Mississippi the 1800s, along with other families connected to them. There are several as of yet unconnected Rob*son families in Mississippi that would seem to tie into the same family as Esther's. --- Jessie Emerson
