Generally speaking, those with the name Lyle (no S) are not genetically related to those spelled Liles and Lyles. Whether spelled with an I or a Y more so than not come from the same family and their DNA is very closely matched, but the lack of the S on the end much more often than not, signifies a different lineage not similar to those spelled with an S. In SC, as a general statement, the Lyle came from Scotland (mostly via Ireland) usually by the mid 1760's or so while the Liles/Lyles came, originally, to Virginia much earlier, circa 1650, and down into SC by the 1740's, The Liles/Lyles are, genetically speaking, of Viking/Norman/English ancestry. This is confirmed by the Lyles/Liles DNA Haplogroup testing I1a, originating in southwest Norway and generally considered pure Viking in origin, while most Lyle test R1b which is of central European origin. There is also history of the Viking settlements in Normandy circa 800 that later result in the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 and notations in the Domesday Book compiled by William the Conqueror for the inventory and taxation of lands given to soldiers taking the surname De Lisle upon receiving lands, most notably the Isle of Wight. Early mid 1600 records in the James River area,in what is now Isle of Wight Co. Virginia, indicate persons named both Lisle and Liles. It is easy to see how a transposition could be made. By the early 1700's Liles/Lyles are found in Brunswick Co Va and later in NC and SC. Records also show migration to Maryland but I have never been able to confirm via DNA results whether this branch matches the Va/NC/SC branch. There are always exceptions, but as administrator of the Lyles/Liles DNA project and seeing the results of these tests for over five years , I can confirm that is the overwhelming tendency. -----Original Message----- From: scchest2-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:scchest2-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bev E Sent: Monday, October 20, 2008 8:19 AM To: scchest2@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCCHEST2] Liles and Lyle Family of Chester Co.
