Elizabeth was the daughter of James Ferguson and Sarah (Unknown maiden name). There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the Ferguson families that were in Chester Co early. There seems to have been 2 or 3 James Ferguson's in the same time frame. There was a James Ferguson who fought for the British during the revolution & another who was hung by Regulators for horse stealing. Robert J. Stevens in his book "Captain Bill Book 3" states that Elizabeth's brother David Ferguson wrote his will on 12/22/1761 in Anson County, NC (later in SC). In it he named Peter Culp and Samuel Neely as executors, two of his brother-in-laws. He also named his sisters Mary, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth and his wife (he did not list his wife by name). In a letter dated 4/9/1986 from Shirley Doran, Genealogist for Clan Ferguson Society of North America she states, "It looks as if Jane, who married Robert Walker, Jr., David who wrote a will dated 22 December 1761, Mary who married an Elliott, Elizabeth who married Peter Culp, Sarah who married Samuel Neely and John who was killed at Barbara Culp McKinney's, were all children of James and Sarah Ferguson. I theorize that David of the 1761 will was the unnamed son of Sarah in Ellet's (Women of the American Revolution), who was also wounded at Barbara McKinney's in August of 1761 and finally died in December." Elizabeth F. Ellet recounts this story in full in the book Women of the American Revolution written in 1850 from an account by Daniel Green Stinson (1793-1879), the historian of Chester Co, SC. This book can be read on line by going to goggle books http://books.google.com/books?id=f_t_IScv4z0C&pg=PR1&dq=women of the american revolution, vol 3 by elizabeth ellet&ei=uSrkRr-IHYi67gKR1Yi8AQ#PPR1,M1 Robert Stevens states on page 193 in his puzzler's #CA, "that there was a James Ferguson who was hung for horse stealing by a group of Regulators in the 1760s somewhere in upper SC. Many people now accept he was the father of Elizabeth Ferguson Culp, but I doubt if the assumption will ever be documented."
