    3. Pete Culp, Joseph Tims [Timms], McFadden's, and Ferguson's were all from Chester Co and both families were numerous. There are more than one James Ferguson in Chester in late 1700's/early 1800's, if my memory serves me correct. Documentation - County records are your best source [unless you come across a rare-to-find family Bible]; merge/compare the county records with census records near that time and you can generally determine who is who, even when the names are same time and same county. Witnesses in a record are very important. Most times, these are either neighbors or close family. If a witness is not from the county, assume it's family. By comparing neighbors of James Ferguson in the census, you can figure out which is "yours" and get a window for his birth year as well [plus family]. I have found many county records in which the family members are named, especially wives. Microfilm is available at many large libraries for almost all county records or you can call the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints [Mormon church], who often have a Family History Center where you can order and view microfilms [~$6 ea]. Another good Chester source are the Chester District Genealogical Society Bulletins, but these are not primary sources. They may be all there is in some cases. See this website for info on these publications [lots of good family stories in these] - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scchest2/scchesterinfo.html All the above names are common in the county's records. Hope this helps. I have this book & if you need these pgs email me at bepstein@sc.rr.com with your email addy. I can scan & send them to you later today or tomorrow. Anne Collins & William Buford Worthy wrote the info on these 2 pgs. What I am interested in is the last paragraph, center col. of pg 431 where it states: "Other Patriots of the American Rev of ours who lived in Chester Co were Issac (sic) McFadden, Sr., James Ferguson. Both were Marion's Men & Joseph Tims." I am trying to figure out who this James Ferguson is. My line is Peter Culp who married Elizabeth Ferguson. Her parents were James Ferguson & Sarah (unknown maiden name). Sarah was killed at the home of Barbara Culp McKinney in the Indian war, the summer of 1781. Does anyone on this list know who this James Ferguson is?
