A word of warning on the Culps. I don't have any in my direct line (so far as I know) but they were neighbors of my Love family in Chester and a couple of the Love sons married into that family. How on earth any imagination could come up with so many spelling variations of a four-letter word are astonishing. You will pretty much need to search through the the Cs and Ks in the index. You will find Culp/Colp/Copp/Colb/Cobb/Kulp/Kolb/Kopp and others. There are more than one James Ferguson in Chester in late 1700's/early 1800's, if my memory serves me correct. Documentation - County records are your best source [unless you come across a rare-to-find family Bible]; merge/compare the county records with census records near that time and you can generally determine who is who, even when the names are same time and same county. Witnesses in a record are very important. Most times, these are either neighbors or close family. If a witness is not from the county, assume it's family. By comparing neighbors of James Ferguson in the census, you can figure out which is "yours" and get a window for his birth year as well [plus family]. I have found many county records in which the family members are named, especially wives. Microfilm is available at many large libraries for almost all county records or you can call the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints [Mormon church], who often have a Family History Center where you can order and view microfilms [~$6 ea]. Another good Chester source are the Chester District Genealogical Society Bulletins, but these are not primary sources. They may be all there is in some cases. See this website for info on these publications [lots of good family stories in these] - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scchest2/scchesterinfo.html All the above names are common in the county's records. Hope this helps. Anne Collins & William Buford Worthy wrote the info on these 2 pgs. Both were Marion's Men & Joseph Tims." I am trying to figure out who this James Ferguson is. My line is Peter Culp who married Elizabeth Ferguson. Her parents were James Ferguson & Sarah (unknown maiden name). Sarah was killed at the home of Barbara Culp McKinney in the Indian war, the summer of 1781. Does anyone on this list know who this James Ferguson is? Its not so much someone's imagination as it is the inability to read handwriting and someone guessed at the pronunciation when transcribing. I've seen names written 2 & 3 different ways in documents. Old handwriting was very hard to decipher. Plus very few knew how to read or write and those that did weren't very good at it so many times you'll see a name spelled phonetically or plain out and out guessed. Never take the spelling of a name as gospel. Always check various ways to spell it and the best thing to do is check other censuses and documents for other family names and/or neighbors because that is how you'll find one of your people whose name is totally off the mark. Sometimes I hear people say..... "after the 1860 census they just disappeared" well.... one could for example find a Culp on a census spelled Dolf or Ault something really strange. Only because the census taker couldn't write or his handwriting was terrible. I try to follow kin and neighbors on census if I lose track of someone because they always stayed pretty much together.
