I am thoroughly confused. Levi Jones Newlan of Gridley, Coffey Co., KS, was indeed married to an Alice, and Ray Newlan (Henry Ray Newlan) of Westphalia, KS, was Levi's nephew. However, their marriage record has her name as LUCKEY -- 1878 May 5, Levi J. Newlan md. Alice A. Luckey, Coffey Co., KS, Book B, p.188 Index to Coffey Co., KS, marriage records, http://www.kscourts.org/dstcts/4comrecm.htm And Levi's 1938 obituary has the same name -- Levi J. Newlan was born March 24, 1851 in Decatur, Ill., and departed this life near Gridley, Kansas, February 21, 1838 at the age of 86 years and 11 months. He was married to Alice LUCKEY in Liberty township, Coffey county, May 5, 1878. They had lived on the old farm on Big Creek south of Gridley for 59 years and in May would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. >From a published transcription of Fairhope Cemetery: Levi J. Newlan, 3-24-1851 to 2-21-1938 Alice A. Newlan, 8-19-1861 to no date When I was at the library in Burlington, KS, collecting obituaries, etc., several years ago, I did not find an obituary for Alice in the library's vast collection, and her gravestone does not have her death date as indicated above. Noting that the 1900 census has her dob as Aug. 1861 as does her gravestone, then she was only 17 when she married Levi. Surely she was too young to have been "Mrs." Luckey when she married Levi in 1878? Not unheard of, but not necessarily common. I checked the Coffey Co. marriage records for both the McCartney and Luckey names among the grooms, but found neither. I'm in the process of posting to the Find A Grave website. Levi's page is at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=33033211 and Alice's is at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=33033923 Neither is quite finished as I write this, but will be soon. Hope you can shed light on this mystery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
