    1. [SCCHEST2] Chester County Gunsmith Thomas Bennett 1812-1861
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mimcga1 Surnames: Bennett, Castles Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.chester/4091/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have any information on a Thomas Bennett who was a gunsmith in Chester County? Information I have found is that he was born in 1812 and died about 1861. A photograph in a book called "Along the Catawba River" Images from the Winthrop University Archives is a full page photograph of an elderly gentleman identified as W.T. Castles of Chester holding a pistol and a rifle made by his grandfather Thomas Bennett. The reason I ask.. we have just completed an inventory of an estate in Greenville County, and in this man's home was an old broken up rifle. I now belongs to my son-in-law, andI have it in my possession, and have begun conservation/restoration of the gun. The barrel is devoid of markings, but has "T. BENNETT" evgraved on it. The rifle appears to be a version of the one being held by the gentleman in the photograph. I would like to talk with someone who can give me any information on Thomas Bennett and maybe who knows something about his work. I realize this is not the forum for this, but I have found through research that there were precious few gunsmiths in South Carolina during that time period 1830-1860, and figured the location of a relic with direct ties to our Chester County Heritage was an interesting situation. Thank anyone who can help, and hello to all my old friends on here! Mike McGarity (former list owner) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Martin and the 5 ships. Jean Stephenson's book "Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772: Reverend William Martin And His Five Shiploads of Settlers" has the names on each ship, the location of land they received, and some names have family names listed taken from the person's will. If people bought their land, they won't be listed. Found the book in the genealogy Reference section in our county library along with Billy Kennedy's book The Scots-Irish in the Carolinas, another good reference about the Martin group. Our family is Stormont who was on the L Dunluce with Martin. Does anyone have a copy of the plat map from the SC Archives? Sure would love to see it. 3. The lady working there was very polite, so I have no problem with that. I also was polite. When I couldn't find what I needed and it was time to leave (I had the publication and page numbers) I tried to leave an order with that office for copies of three pages. The lady would not accept it because they "didn't have time." At one point I was directed to an office across the hall. The people in that office said "We didn't have those records and have no idea why you were directed there." Then, one of the women said to the other, "They don't do their job over there." It was a total waste of a vacation day from work, I'm very sorry to say. And, I still need those pages. Maybe Fridays aren't a good day to go there. And in South Carolina, we should be aware that some Counties (York springs to mind) have given the originals of their very old records to the South Carolina Archives. The guest speaker was Dr. Steven D. Tuttle of the SC Archives. From my understanding of what he told us; only about 10% of the information that they have is on line at this time. He also said that most of the counties had made copies that had been given to them BUT that some counties retained their records at the county level. So not only is only a portion on line at this time but some of it may still be in the county. So don't give up if you don't find it on line yet, just think of another way to search for it.
