I had never heard of MESDA, and am glad to know of it's existence. Several others have responded with information on Thomas Bennett and his family. I have learned that he had a William Kirkpatrick (age 21) living in his household in 1850 and was also listed on the 1850 Census as a gunsmith. My assumption is that Wm. was an apprentice to Thomas Bennett. I have learned that he had a William Kirkpatrick (age 21) living in his household in 1850 and was also listed on the 1850 Census as a gunsmith. My assumption is that Wm. was an apprentice to Thomas Bennett. > As I look over on my workbench at this old rifle, I realize now that it is not just a conservation effort, but will turn into a labor of love for our Chester County Roots. > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Have done a look at Bennett .. for some that found their way to east Alabama. Found a census record for a Posey Bennett, son of William Bennett in the 1880 Randolph Co., AL Census. - William K. Bennett is the son of Jones Bennett. *(Jones Bennett is not Amos Jones Bennett of this lineage) * Working on the lineage of William K. Bennett's brother, John Romaldus Bennett. John Romaldus Bennett is burried in Randolph Co. Alabama. The Posey Bennett in this census would be born around 1869. 1880 Randolph Co., AL Census, Beat 11 18/18 Bennett, William, W. M, 31, M, Shoemaker, GA, SC, SC Sarah, W, F, 31, Wife, M, Housekeeping, GA, GA, GA Posey, W, M, 11, Son, S, At School, GA, GA, GA <<<<Would be 21 in 1899>>> Sela, W, F, 9, Daughter, S, At School, GA, GA, GA William, W, M, 7, Son, S, GA, GA, GA Amos, W, M, 4, Son, S, GA, GA, GA Susan, W, F, 2, Daughter, S, AL, GA, GA 1870 Chambers Co., AL, Beat 1, p. 12 164/164 Bennett, William, 21, M, W, Farmer, 200, Georgia Sarah, 21, F, W, Keeping House, Georgia Bennett, J. P., 1, M, W, Georgia Stephen Lureny (?), 20, F, B, Farm Hand, Alabama. The headright of this family before William Bennett... is not located yet, and as there are many Bennett in North Georgia, I cannot say where he came from to get to east Alabama! Appears that in early Troup Co, Ga.. the man was a cobbler/leather maker.. shoes, saddles, and holsters, etc.. his two sons then continued in the work.. Posey & Jones Amos .. their shop was near the old train depot in LaGrange. Information I have found is that he was born in 1812 and died about 1861. A photograph in a book called "Along the Catawba River" Images from the Winthrop University Archives is a full page photograph of an elderly gentleman identified as W.T. Castles of Chester holding a pistol and a rifle made by his grandfather Thomas Bennett. > > The reason I ask.. we have just completed an inventory of an estate in Greenville County, and in this man's home was an old broken up rifle. I now belongs to my son-in-law, andI have it in my possession, and have begun conservation/restoration of the gun. The barrel is devoid of markings, but has "T. BENNETT" evgraved on it. The rifle appears to be a version of the one being held by the gentleman in the photograph. > > I would like to talk with someone who can give me any information on Thomas Bennett and maybe who knows something about his work. I realize this is not the forum for this, but I have found through research that there were precious few gunsmiths in South Carolina during that time period 1830-1860, and figured the location of a relic with direct ties to our Chester County Heritage was an interesting situation. > > Thank anyone who can help, and hello to all my old friends on here! > > Mike McGarity (former list owner) > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
