I believe that there were 3 or 4 James Ferguson's/Furguson's in Chester at approximately the same time. One was a known officer of the Loyalist Militia under the command of the British Army and another one the SC militia hanged as a horse thief. Who were the rest of them and how come no one is claiming the horse thief? haha The Cherokee Indians killed Elizabeth Ferguson Culp's mother Sarah and her brother John in August of 1761 at the home of Barbara Culp McKinney, Elizabeth's sister-in-law. According to Robert J. Stevens "The author Elizabeth F. Ellet recounts this story in full in the book Women of the American Revolution written in 1850 from an account by Daniel Green Stinson (1793-1879), the historian of Chester Co, SC." Where was Elizabeth's father James Ferguson at the time? It's the always the old problem of not enough time or resources to figure out who is who. Then there is the compounded problem of spelling. I think in order to sort them one would have to plot the land grants & follow each family line. Besides all the different spellings of the Culp name, the patriarch of this family was German. They followed the custom of using the middle name, so you will find some of the records of Hans Casper Kolb/Kulp in the name of Casper or Gasper also. Don't you love a good puzzle? In the 1800s it was a sign of high education to know several ways to spell the same word/name. Often within the same document. My favorite was Alien - which was supposed to be Ellis. Or Ladowak for Ludwig. SharonW -----Original Message-----
Its not so much someone's imagination as it is the inability to read handwriting and someone guessed at the pronunciation when transcribing. I've seen names written 2 & 3 different ways in documents. Old handwriting was very hard to decipher. Plus very few knew how to read or write and those that did weren't very good at it so many times you'll see a name spelled phonetically or plain out and out guessed. Never take the spelling of a name as gospel. Always check various ways to spell it and the best thing to do is check other censuses and documents for other family names and/or neighbors because that is how you'll find one of your people whose name is totally off the mark. Sometimes I hear people say..... "after the 1860 census they just disappeared" well.... one could for example find a Culp on a census spelled Dolf or Ault something really strange. Only because the census taker couldn't write or his handwriting was terrible. I try to follow kin and neighbors on census if I lose track of someone because they always stayed pretty much together. You're welcome, Sharon. I'm glad to see that the word "documentation" is in your genealogy vocabulary! I must confess, when I first started researching about 20 years ago, I did not realize the importance of documenting sources. Therefore, I had to go back and verify a lot of information. Good luck! Does anyone know the "general" history of Chester County from the very early 1800s? Did people travel a lot between counties? Between SC and the territories (MS,GA,AL)? Or back to VA? Specifically, I'm looking for info on Greenbury Worthy, born ca 1819 in Chester County. I find a Greenbury Worthy in AL a generation before, and would guess he's an uncle, but can't get beyond that speculation. So any clues are welcome. Sharon Worthey
