    3. I read the link to Godey's Lady's book, Heroic Women of the Revolution, the story quoted here is identical to the story in Women of the American Revolution, Vol 3, pg 227-228. With one exception Godey's says David Elliot and the other says Daniel Elliot. From The Bulletin, Chester District Geneaological Society newsletter, I have a mention of a Margaret Elliot marrying a Charles Orr, also a John Alexander Douglas became indebted to Ebeneezer Elliot as administrator of the goods and chattels of William Elliot, dec. and finally it states there is an old book "Confessions of Faith" by was old and owned by Ebenezzer Elliot, one of the first Elders of the A.R.P. Church at Union. One may be able to find more at the Union A.R.P.church near Richburg. I have a lot of Elizabeth Fergusons in my database, but no one married to a Elliot. 1. RE: Census
    2. Also, many libraries provide access to Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest at the library. All you need is a library card. In fact, many of the census rolls are available through the library online with a library card. The HeritageQuest census rolls aren't as easy to search - you have to use the exact spelling of the person who indexed the census - which means that sometimes you have to guess at different ways of misspelling the name - but it's still a nice service. (As to misspellings - my ancestor's surname was Southern and the census taker spelled it "Sothren" , then the indexer thought the "S" was an "L" so Southern was indexed as Lothren. Oh my!) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2005 1:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Census "The List" If you can't "afford" to subscribe to Ancestry.com's census report, for all Fed yrs,, check with the Family History Library at your nearest LDS (Mormon) church and your local main library. 1. Chaulk
    2. Regarding "sidewalk chaulk" Maureen Taylor says in her site: http://www.genealogy.com/64_gravestones.html "Cleaning the Stone Cleaning a cemetery stone is a controversial topic. The first rule of conservation and preservation is to cause no damage. Unfortunately, by using household cleaners, chalk and shaving cream to enhance the lettering you may injure the surface in ways that are not readily apparent. Caution should be used before you destroy what you set out to preserve". What could be "more harmless" than ol' white chaulk ? But, when you come to think of it, what is used to "color" sidewalk chaulk? and what do the marketers of "side walk chaulk" care about grave stones ? Maureen Taylor tells you how to do it at: http://www.genealogy.com/64_gravestones.html RWD Thanks to Bill Lathan & Maureen Mead

    1. J. Mather Martin / James L. Martin / Martins in Chester Co., SC / Martin Researcher, Janice
    2. Bill Derrow
    3. Trying to find a current email address for Martin researcher, Janice, whose email used to be [email protected] Below is a message I sent in January that I don't think found its way to her. Is anyone else researching Martins in Chester County, South Carolina? Would like to hear from you. Bill Derrow Washington, DC ********************** Hi, Janice, I don't know if we've corresponded before, but I see (in various message boards) that you are researching some of the same families as I am and am wondering if you've come across anything new related to the parents of James L. Martin. You, as I (and my two elderly aunts who've been working at this for 50 years) do, have a reference to James L. Martin's father's name being J. Mather Martin. I noticed a message from you asking about him. Did you ever receive a reply? Just today I saw a reference to a female Mather Martin in the 1880 census of Chester County, South Carolina. As South Carolina was the supposed birthplace of James L. Martin (per the 1850 census), I'm wondering if it would be worth exploring Chester County for earlier Martins. It seems like every path I've taken to get around this brick wall as led nowhere, but I keep trying! <>Bill Derrow

    3. *SIDEWALK CHALK, SIDEWALK CHALK, SIDEWALK CHALK* What more can I say? This: Use a NEW NATURAL BRISTLE brush ( if the brush has been used with any modern cleanser or bleach it should NOT be used on ancient tombstones even if the brush is supposedly clean). Also okay is plain water to knock off dirt. ANYTHING ELSE CAN DAMAGE OLD TOMBSTONES. Please, if you value the memorial to your ancestors don't use anything else. Modern brushes can leave plastic residue which when combined with pollution in modern rainwater can cause the stone to flake off. ALL modern cleansers are bad. If you use bleach you should also plan on replacing the marker... a few years later it won't be there. The joy of chalk is that it is a natural substance and after a few rain storms will wash off of the stone. Respect your ancestors and use only water, a natural bristle brush and natural chalk. This photo was done with sidewalk chalk. http://www.wclathan.com/images/big/44WilliamLathan%5B1%5D.jpg Notice how the lettering stands out. All you do is rub the side of the chalk on the stone like kids do to do a tracing. This cemetery is in the White Oak area of Fairfield Co., S.C. More pictures from this cemetery can be seen on the page linked below. All done with natural chalk. A cousin of mine who lives in a neighboring county walked into the forest with another relative a year later and... the chalk was washed off by nature and the stones were NOT damaged! Don't take chances. http://www.wclathan.com/photos/historic_thumbs_2.htm [email protected] wrote: ><SNIP> >http://www.genealogy.com/64_gravestones.html > > >

Right now I am researching Milk of Magnesia ! It is an anti-acid so it might be too alkali, but it is a white liquid an it is cheap. A water spray bottle. A squeegee, like window cleaners use What triggered this is that I received a photo of Lt. James Greer's headstone, but it is very, very difficult to read, but thanks to MLB ! Short on time ? Use a Video canera or a new? digital camera to photo a whole? cemetery of headstones Write a location where you start and where you finish.. 2. Jessie Emerson
    3. I am looking for information on the William Embracure found in the 1790 Chester County, SC, census. Minimal googling reveals that Embracure is not a viable surname, so I'm wondering if this William Embracure in Chester County in 1790 is the same person as the William Emberson found in Kershaw County in 1800. Embracure appears to be a transcription error. Jessie Emerson Huntsville, Alabama

    3. The following photographs are on album pages that Jessie Hart Shuman kept. I think they were friends of my grandmother (Jessie) and/or her mother, Emma Hart, originally of Chester, SC. They lived in Charlotte, NC by the turn of the century. They both lived the rest of their lives in Charlotte. Probably most of these people are from Chester, SC or Charlotte, NC. I hope you recognizes some of the names and can give me some information about the person. I have scanned most of them and could send the scan to anyone who thinks they are related. I have typed the photos from each page in a group. Some photos are missing, but I didn’t type in the names for those photos. Emma was a Walker b. 1852 in Chester. Her parents were Col. William and Rachel Eliza McCullough. Emma had 2 brothers also named William. She married in Chester County to Eugene Hart. Eugene was not from Chester. Her daughter Jessie married Charles Franklin Shuman in Charlotte in 1907. This Walker family was very close to the Cornwells of Chester and Blackstock. They also had ties in Columbia and Rock Hill. They were likewise close to the Hollers and Jarrells. Please don’t request more than two or three images in one email. I’ll send them out as quickly as I can respond. I hope you can shed some light for me on who these people are. I am particularly interested in the 2 names Frank Hart and Frank Hart Fowler. I assume they are the same person.
