    3. Oh, thanks so much Peggy....this is why the Coats have to go to the original records so much...we're just not in anything....:) While I'm at it...there is another group of Courts in MD, that name is Courts in the original records but it has been transcribed as Coats...another reason for using original records....:) The Coats name btw, is spelled Coats, Coates, Coate and Cotes and sometimes all three versions in the same record.... In Robertson County TN, there is a William Couts who has a deed transaction with a John Baker...now, that same William Couts in the original records has been transcribed in the court minutes as Coats...but this William Couts dies in Robertson County TN about 1850 or so, and his wife's name is Nancy!! Now my Rev William Coats m Nancy Baker...for years this has been thought to be the connection for them...then in other D.A.R. research and an old family genealogy has Nancy Baker's father as Sylvester Baker out of NC...well, I could never put my Coats family anywhere near NC during the time period Rev William and Nancy were married....but guess what, there is a John Baker in Wilson County TN who dies in 1844, he was a minuteman in the Revolution, in Nancy's estate papers in Callaway County MO, she is left the estate of a John Baker of TN...in John's Revolutionary pension file he says he was born in VA, where he was in the Revolution, he moves shortly thereafter to SC, then KY then TN...so that puts him in SC at the time Rev Will and Nancy were married....bottom line, I believe Nancy Baker's father was John Baker of Wilson County TN, who died there in 1844 and left his estate to her...the John Baker in Robert County TN is a different John Baker, he never leaves Robertson County TN but does have a son I believe and some land transactions in Wilson County TN....see how this all gets confused!! Nancy's oldest son in the 1880 census also states she was born in VA! So no wonder we can't find any of them....:) Char ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Peggy Carey" <[email protected]> To: "Charlotte Coats" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [SCCHEST2] Re: SCCHEST2-D Digest V05 #45 Date: Mon, 10 Oct 2005 11:26:32 -0500 I have both volumes of "Chester County, S.C. 3. Hello, my name is Lena & though I have several roots that lead back to South Carolina there is one family that has been such a brick-wall that putting a chink in the wall seems impossible. My G4Grandparents are Milton & Jane DOUGLAS Boyd through John Matthew & Mary Elizabeth BOYD McCrary to Dr. William Rufus & Frances Helena 'Lena' PINKSTON McCrary & finally Luther Hill Sr. & Helen MCCRARY Sr. 'Monie' Randall (my great-grandparents). Milton was born 07 April 1804 in Chester District, SC died 30 September 1875 Meriwether County, Georgia married Jane about 1832 (probably in SC), born 20 March 1804 Chester District, South Carolina died 10 March 1878 Meriwether County, Georgia. They are both buried in City Cemetery which is located in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia. CHILDREN: Margaret Catherine Boyd married William R. Edge Keziah Boyd married William W. Sasser Mary Elizabeth Boyd married Dr. John Matthew McCrary John William Boyd married Eliza B. Williams (Col.) Joseph David Boyd married Emily Alford My problem is carrying the family back from Milton & Jane to their roots in South Carolina. There is a William Boyd who married a Keziah PORTER whom I wonder about since Milton & Jane named a daughter Keziah, but only two children (Nancy & Hugh M.) are mentioned in his then Keziah's Revolutionary Pension Application. As well, Keziah & William Sasser named a son Hugh Boyd Sasser, & uncle John had the middle name of William. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to carry Milton & Jane's roots back to South Carolina. Oh, I subscribe to the Digest, so forgive me if I do not respond promptly. Sincerely, Lena --------------------------------- Yahoo! Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs. Try it free.

    1. Family Migrations from SC and VA, to TN, AL, and MS
    2. Jessie Emerson
    3. Family Migrations from SC and VA, to TN, AL, and MS WHO ARE WE? WHERE DID WE COME FROM? Descendants of George EMERSONand Esther ROBINSON invite families with connections in North Alabama, North Mississippi, and Southern Tennessee, to attend a meeting to learn more about our ancestors. Saturday, October 8, 2005 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET Sims Jr. Neighborhood Facilities Building (inside) 371 Seventh Avenue SW Hamilton, Alabama 35570 205-921-4371 If you wish, bring a dish or a non-alcoholic drink to add to the event potluck. Bring your Gedcom files, handwritten notes, and verbal stories to share! We will try to have a small flatbed scanner available to scan photographs, so be sure to bring those, too. We believe that our ancestors, George EMERSON/EMBERSON and Esther ROB*SON (variations include Robinson, Roberson, Robertson, etc.), came from Virginia/South Carolina through Tennessee and into Alabama. Various branches or connections of this family also migrated to counties in Mississippi, including Itawamba and Tishomingo counties. This movement is consistent with migration patterns of the time. For more information, visit our Yahoo group devoted to this search for difficult-to-find ancestors at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/emerson_robinson/. More About George and Esther Emerson: - George Emerson/Emberson was born in Virginia, and there are contemporary Embersons listed in various genealogies for Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and other states, but no definite connections have been made. - Esther Rob*son was born in SC, and several possibilities for origins of Emberson and Robinson families in South Carolina exist (that is, with an 1800 census listing both Emberson and Rob*son families), most notably in Kershaw, Chester, Spartanburg, Lancaster, and Pendleton Districts/Counties. - We have some evidence that Esther's father was John Rob*son, of which there are several throughout the census records. George and Esther's second son was named John Robinson Emerson, and the first son was named William Emerson, leading us to believe that they might have used Scots/Irish naming patterns in the family. If that is the case, then the William Emberson and John Robinson families listed in the 1800 Kershaw County, SC, census may be our best clue. - We have some word-of-mouth evidence that George and Esther lived in Franklin County, Tennessee, before coming to Alabama. The name "Emerson" appears rarely in early Franklin County, Tennessee, records, but there are two Embersons (John and James) and one Emburson (George) listed in the 1812 Tax List. A William Emberson is listed in "Franklin County Men in the Indian Wars." - In the 1830 and 1850 censuses, George and Esther are in Lawrence County, Alabama. - Sometime before 1860, George and Esther moved from Lawrence County to Marion County, Alabama, in the Shottsville area. - Several members of both the Emerson and Robinson families migrated to Mississippi the 1800s, along with other families connected to them. There are several as of yet unconnected Rob*son families in Mississippi that would seem to tie into the same family as Esther's. --- Jessie Emerson

    3. I am certain the Godey's Lady's book, Heroic Women of the Revolution, is in error with the name ''David Elliott'' for I have never seen Daniel Elliott as David either. However, I have seen the name Daniel look like David in a census record on another person I am researching. Therefore, most likely a transcription error on the Godey's Lady's book part. 3. Let me grasp at straws, please. I have a Henry Elliott, could be John Henry Elliott who were in Bradley County, Arkansas as early as 1837 because a child was born in Arkansas that year. Henry Elliott married Nancy Spencer, who was born in North Carolina in 1792. Henry died before the 1850 census; Nancy spencer died between 1870 and 1880 in Bradley County, Arkansas. Children that I found in Nancy's census record are: Aramintha, born in Alabama, age 26 in 1850 John S., age 20 in 1850, born in Alabama, Sarah V, age 13, in 1850, born in Arkansas. In the census record, it was checked that Nancy spencer Elliott could read and write. In Bradley County, she was living next door to Coker and Franklin families. I also found a Spencer Elliott, born about 1832 in Tennessee. I have no idea whether he is a child of Henry and Nancy Elliott, but the "Spencer" name might indicate it. He was also in Bradley County, Arkansas.
