I think I missed the beginnings of the conversations on the will books. I am researching the KNOX family...............................it is written that Robert KNOX went from Franklin Co. Ky "about 1810" to settle the estate of his departed wife. This info in a book on the KNOX family. Does any thing show up in Chester County or near by for this woman............Elizabeth Gill KNOX.? Second wife of Robert was Millie Buckhannon. Robert KNOX is the son of James Knox and Lady Elizabeth Craig. I have our KNOX line back to the birth of Austin Knox, b. 1810 Kentucky, m. Susan Ann ELLISTON (lst husband, A. Castleman) in 1834. I know without a doubt that this line for Austin continues back to James and Lady Elizabeth. But parentage is a real question...........is the father of Austin to be Robert, or his oldest son?? Tieing together two ends of research is at the top of my Christmas list.............!!!!!!!!! It would really help me to have this estate settlement. Phyllis Counts Raker, Cincinnati
I was the coordinator for the Chester County site for the past 3 years, but had to give it up for personal reasons. I am not sure why Victoria is not answering your emails, and it seems strange to me that she has not contacted you in reference to this. She has the responsibility for 48 county coordinators and I know she is stretched to the limit sometimes. Be warned that adopting a county is a very time-consuming job. You will receive emails (like I did - up to 100 a day) that may require your personal attention. You will receive hate emails, because you cannot answer individual questions concerning other people's ancestors. You need to know html programming inside and out so that you can maintain and update your web pages. You will have to constantly scour and research in order to keep your pages and information up to date and interesting. You may have to re-research when you post information that another researcher indicates is in error. I'm not complaining, because I believe I made many more friends than enemies during my tenure as Chester coordinator. But, it's almost impossible to do if you have a full time job out in the world. It is perfect for someone who has retired or is stay-at-home for whatever reason. The benefits and friendships far outweigh the downside, but you must be prepared for the downside - if you have ever worked in the service industry ( restaurants, retail, hotels) you know what working for the public is like. I agree, Chester needs an active coordinator. The county has so much history that we have not even began to tap yet, that it is a shame to let it sit there and do nothing. I have copied the Chester mail list on this, and will try and contact her through nationals for you. Maybe someone has a new email address for her or can shed some light on what's up with Victoria. There is a UDC marker erected by the Lafayette Strait chapter in May 1939 that is near a church, probably near Richburg, Chester County that lists "In Memoriam" a long list of soldiers headed by Jno Dixon Adams, Corpl; Jno R. Adams; Wm B. Agnew, Geo W Agnew; J. Calvin Agnew; Jas. F. Atkinson Capt; J. Thompson Backstrom, etc, etc. ending with W. Brown Wylie. In the background of the picture sent to me there is an iron fence around a large graveyard. Can anyone tell me the name of the church? Louise Pettus
HELP, I am looking for Alexander McClure who came out of South Carolina around 1830 and moved his family to Illinois. I have been told he is possible from the line of William Christian McClure born 1727 County Donegal, Ireland who came to America with a group of Protestants around 1760 or William's son John McClure who married Eleanor Sturmont in 1803 in Chester County, South Carolina. Does any one have any information on this McClure line and was there a Alexander. Thank you, Ira McClure

Let's see....this is what I have on the Coats family in Chester County SC: http://www.coatsarchive.us/docschester.html Now, Notley has a daughter named Peggy, I think it was, that we don't know what happened to her....his son went to MS, William was his name and he married a Jane Huey, we believe...Notley's will is at the above link... This is the group we believe came from Frederick County MD, Notley we believe to be the son of Charles Coats of Frederick County MD, where the name is spelled Coart in the transcribed records, in the MD Tax records this Charles is very elderly over 60, but he shows a son Notley and James living with him in MD about 1772, then in SC we have a Notley and James that show up in Chester County SC...there is also another Charles we believe to be younger than the Charles in MD...he is connected to Notley and James somehow, but we're not sure, and maybe a William Coats, who was Quaker in Newberry County SC, this Charles of SC moves to Jefferson County GA in the late 1700s....land records give the names of some of his kids...there is also a James Coats in GA...we're not sure if that is a son of Charles or some other relation i.e. brother...both Charles and James die early on, early 1800s... According to John Baker's revolutionary war file, he lived 60 miles from Charleston on the Broad River, which would put him pretty close to Newberry County SC...but how he is connected to any of the other Bakers in SC, I do not know...and there are a lot of Bakers there....:) There is a Baker DNA project and a list at Yahoo Groups...they are very active, strong and doing some really good research on the Bakers...it was with their help that really helped me to determine my Baker line was via John of Wilson County TN rather than Sylvester of North Carolina, regardless of what the old research says!!! And in 1840 John Baker of Wilson County TN is living alone on the tax records, so I figure he must have had some land...maybe a Jeremiah Baker on the tax lists with him was a son or nephew...but I'm looking now for land records that shows what happened to John's land after he died...and in some cases those records may not how up for 20 years after he died, if he had a son who took the land after he died and then say didn't sell it until later..... We have to enjoy the Hunt! Paul, I do not know about the Eliotts, but I feel safe in saying the Boyd's moved to various areas here in Georgia. William & Keziah moved to DeKalb County, their son Milton moved to Meriwether County a bit farther south (believe this is because Jane's parents moved there). I believe William & Keziah's other children stayed around them. Exactly how many children William & Keziah had I am unsure of, but they had more than the two listed in their separate pension applications for the census records indicate this-just wish I could find that absolute proof Milton was one of them as it appears he was (but alas the search is part of genealogy that keeps us going :) ).
