A group of SMITH cousins are doing research on the following line of SMITH descent back to England (JAMES SMITH-b. c. 1800 Franklin County, GA - d. 1861 Franklin County, GA) son of (JESSE SMITH-b. 16 April 1765 in Anson Co, NC d. 11 Apr 1842 in Franklin CO, GA Rev War service in SC) son of (JOHN "LITTLE RIVER" SMITH-b. bet.1720-1740 Rowen Co. We are participating in the SOUTHERN SMITHS DNA PROJECT in hope of finding our correct SMITH lineage. We encourage all that have Southern SMITH roots to visit the website and consider participating in the project. http://www.southernsmiths.org/smithdnaproject.htm We have noticed quite a few people on Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org and other websites are or were researching our SMITH family, but in most instances we cannot contact them because of unknown or invalid email addresses. If you have any knowledge or connection with these SMITHS please consider helping us in this research. We will be more than glad to share information Sheryl Smith Phillips
I have a Weir family. Well a small portion. John Albert Rutherford Weir m. Emma Jane Wylie. Daughter Arda Julia Weir m. Howard Marlin. The only dates and locations I have is Emma Wylie's parents were born abt. 1818 possibly later, in Chester SC and moved to Monroe Co. IN where father Francis d. 1872. They were probably married sometime around 1840/50 as two children were born 1859 and 1861 out of 7 children so don't know marriage dates. The Marlin family came from Chester S.C. and some ended up in Indiana. Sorry Mary, none of the name's are familiar. Again, there were no doubt other Ross families that I know nothing about. My Hugh and Elizabeth Ross family was fair sized with connections to other families I probably know noting about, so your names may connect somewhere, just not with my line. Franki
Virginia My great grandmother was Sarah Melinda Ross, however, she married Littleton Hartwell Gwin/Guinn not Westbrook. She and Hart did move to AR about 1870 with other members of their family. Already in AR was her aunt, Elizabeth Ross White, widow of Frank White, and Elizabeth's daughter, I think her name was Jane. who married a Westbrook in SC. I have the names of these people, and can find a bit more. Sarah M is found in other branches of this same Hugh Ross family so it is evidently a family name. Let me know if you need further info. It may take awhile to look things up, but glad to. Don't like working from memory. Franki

Unfortunately, the author did not include an index, and the references to specific families and persons occur throughout the narrative from William Coleman's journals. I would say, if you know your ancestor served in the 6th SC Volunteers Infantry during the war, then it's highly possible they may be mentioned. As a for instance, my ancestor Frank Knox was mentioned once, at the Battle of Shiloh. The Chester County Company was stationed in a field, near a church and cemetery. Frank Knox was quoted as saying "Well, at least they won't have far to carry us [after we're killed]." Others have similar references, and some are written about quite a bit. It's still a great little novel about Chester and the men and women who sacrificed so much during the war. Perhaps if I have some free time this weekend, I can skim it and make a listing. Looks like rain again for us in the Upstate of SC, so I'll be stuck indoors anyway.. I'll give it a shot. To anyone who has seen the new Civil War book on Chester County. Are there any Johnsons and Rowells in the book? How about Green Ferguson? Thanks. Peggy Carey Dumas, Arkansas [email protected]
Hi Listers: Here is a link to another good book on the Civil War the book is ''Echoes of Mercy - Whispers of Love'' [the diary of the Rev. John Hemphill Simpson from Chester County SC] can read about the book at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church website: http://www.arpsynod.org/echoes.html

Dear List Members: For those of you that have not heard, a new book is out , written by William J. Watson (published by Broken Lance Enterprises of Stroudsburg, PA) entitled Brother William's War. (214pp.) This book is gleaned from the Civil War journals of William Coleman of Chester SC, who served in the 6th South Carolina Volunteer's Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. There are many, many Chester County family names mentioned in the book, and it is probably one of the best-written Civil War books I have ever read. This book is available in bookstores in the region. (I got mine at the Book Rack in Rock Hill, SC 803-327-9028) The book is very reasonably priced there at $11.00. I am not related to the "Red Headed" Colemans of Chester County (author's description, not mine) , but many of you may be, and this is an opportunity to read the story from a soldier's perspective and to really see and feel what Chester and the surrounding County was like in the war years of 1861-1865. I highly recommend it!! In fact, I finished it in two nights, it was so interesting. Maybe some other list members will know of other sources - I know none outside the Chester-York Co. area I reside in, but I bet Book Rack would ship you one. I included their number above. Hope this will interest you. Mike McGarity Chester County List Administrator
