    1. Mills' Atlas reply
    2. E. Y. Turner
    3. This is probably more than you want to know about the Mills' Atlas One can order county maps from each county's genealogy society and I think from the local court house. This is where I purchased my first for Chester County in the 1970s. Also, you can order Chester District's Mills' Atlas from the Chester Dist. Gen. Society These are great for framing!! Make great gifts!! Small Size 8 1/2" x 11" $2.00 Large Size 20" x 30" $5.00 address for ordering: The CDGS P.O. Box 336 Richburg, SC 29729 http://www.rootsweb.com/~scchest2/scchesterinfo.html -------- For the book try this: Mills' Atlas: Atlas of the State of South Carolina, 1825 (Hardcover) by S. Emmett Lucas try www.Amazon.com ------- more about Mill's Atlas Subject: Mills' Atlas of 1825 http://members.tripod.com/Coker_Forum/c01494.htm From: Steve Coker Date: March 11, 1998 Robert Mills "Atlas of the State of South Carolina 1825" In 1826 Robert Mills submitted to the South Carolina State Senate a copy of his Atlas. It was the first atlas of an American state. Several dozen individuals had worked since 1815 to complete the Atlas. At least twenty surveyors had prepared careful surveys of every District. As Mill's later stated, South Carolina was "now acknowledged to be in advance of her Sister States ..." In his speech given at the 6th International Conference on the History of Cartography, 7-11 September, 1975, Walter W. Ristow noted that Maine and New York published state atlases in 1829 and that no other state published another one for thirty-five years. The Atlas includes maps of each of the then existing Districts in South Carolina. Each District map shows place names, waterbodies, roads, and other useful information. Plantations, farms, mills, ferries, and more are shown usually using the name of the owner. For example, several Coker families are shown in the Atlas. My ancestor Whitley Coker is shown with the place name "Whitley Coker's Plt." on the Sumter District map as being about 5-10 miles Southwest of the town of Sumterville (now Sumter) along Cain Savanna Creek. Also shown on the Sumter District map are John Coker, Thomas Coker, and Henry Coker. In Barnwell District is shown a Mrs. Coker and in Laurens District is shown Coker. There were actually four essential works produced. First, there were surveys made of each District between 1817 and 1821. Second, there were some district maps produced between 1818 and 1821 from some of the surveys. Third, in the fall of 1821 the first 50 copies of Wilson's Map of the State were printed and another 2,500 were printed in April 1882. And Fourth, Robert Mills worked to produce the Atlas between 1823 and 1825 using the earlier works as the basis. The Atlas was published in 1825 and first distributed in 1826. The first three projects were funded and controlled by the State. However, the sales of the State Map were miserable. As a result, the State Legislature did not accept proposals to produce an Atlas made in 1821 and 1822 by the Board of Public Works. Mills was one of the two paid Commissioners of the Board of Public Works. The Board of Public Works was abolished in 1822 and replaced with a Superintendent of Public Works. In 1823, Mills requested permission to privately produce an atlas. On 19 December, 1823, the Legislature ratified a contract for Mills to produce the Atlas. The original contract called for the State to receive "at least" 12 free atlases and to purchase fifty more at a total cost of $600. By December 1825, a new contract had been made and the State was to receive 80 atlases for $1,200. Mills charged $16 per copy to regular subscribers. The number of Atlases printed for the first edition is unknown. At least one thousand separate district maps were printed. By 1980 there had been seven printings of the Atlas, including the 1980 reprint. Mills himself reprinted a rare edition of about 1838. The third printing was in 1938 by Lucy Hampton Bostick and Fant H. Thornley. The Fourth printing was in 1965 by Robert Pearce Wilkins and John D. Keels, Jr. The fifth printing was in 1979 by A. Press, Inc. The sixth printing was in 1979 by the Sandlapper Store, Inc. The seventh printing was in 1980 by the Southern Historical Press, c/o The Rev. S. Emmett Lucas Jr., P.O. Box 738, Easely, SC 29640. The 7th edition was dedicated to the South Carolina Historical Society, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gignilliat, and Mr. Gene Waddell. Gene Waddell wrote the introduction for the seventh printing. The Atlas should be available in the reference departments or rare books section of main libraries in the State of South Carolina or at the SC Historical Society or at the Library of Congress. 2. Ann , do you know if a list of burials other than Alexander Grant's list exists for Armenia Methodist ? My grandfather was married to Caroline Grant , their graves were unmarked until a few years ago. Beside their graves is a third unmarked grave which I believe is a daughter . Tom and Caroline Grant Brooks had 3 daughters ; Cora , Ida and Frances. I have only been able to find Frances , so I am not sure which of the other daughters it might be. Anything would be helpful. Thanks , Helen Skipper

    1. Cedar Shoals plantation house
    2. Hi Kirby: That's interesting to hear that the plantation house at Cedar Shoals lasted that long! Is there any chance that you could scan the sketch of the house and put it on this Chester County list? I suspect that is the property that originally belonged to Justice John Gaston and his wife Esther. Is that possible? I am a descendant of Justice John through his daughter Margaret, who was married to James McCreary and died rather young. My line goes through her daughter Margaret, who married Samuel Telford. I wonder if Samuel and Margaret McCreary Telford are buried in the Cedar Shoals Cemetery. I've never known where their graves are. Nancy Sicotte California

It is a very pretty little church with a well maintained cemetery. The address is 5056 Richburg Road, Richburg, SC 29729. (This area is called the Bascomville community) I have obtained a "Cemetery Directory" compiled & recorded by Dr. Robert H. Walker. I also have a publication called "Cedar Shoal Church and Congregation, Chester County, South Carolina" by the Reverend James H. Saye. There is a sketch of Dr. John Brown Gaston of "Cedar Shoals" and a sketch of "Cedar Shoals Plantation House" on the cover of this publication. I obtained these documents from my Aunt, Eliza Ashe Darby. The Cedar Shoals Plantation was located about a mile from the churck and was purchased from the Gastons by George Washington Kirkpatrick, Sr. This was a beautiful upland piedmont plantation house. It survived until the 1960s. There is a home on the site of the original house occupied by G. W. Kirkpatrick's G-G-Grandson and family. 1. Cemetery Information - McKeown, Chambers, Goza, etc.
    2. My Mother's McKeown Ancestors migrated from Chester County, SC to Gadsden County, Florida about 1845. I have been researching the McKeown and related families for many years, and I have acquired a great deal of genealogical information. If you have any McKeown connections, I will most likely have something to share. I have 654 McKeown Surnamed individuals who trace their ancestry back to Chester County. Like most genealogists, I am always hoping to find something new, so if you have any McKeown Cemetery information to share, I would like to hear from you. A brick wall for me has been Charles Christopher "CC" Chambers, born about 1816 in NC, but most likely lived or passed through Chester County on his was to Florida about 1845. I also collect Goza information. Thanks for reading this. Jim Webb - Jacksonville, Florida

    1. Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church

    3. Below is the transcribed document from pages 1-3 of "Early Records of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church", the book mentioned in earlier posts. There is also transcribed the first minutes of the May 14 1799 Session when Rev. Davies was ordained. Both seem to have been written by the same person and Fishing Creek is written throughout with a double line at the bottom between Fishing and creek and creek is all lower case. When these writings are combined with the one Virginia sent, it gives a more complete view of the two churches and the area during that time. ___________________________ Pages 1-3 "A brief historical sketch of the church of Fishing_creek , in Chester District S. C. This church was organized about the year 1770. Of its first bench of Elders were Samuel Neely, John Latta, Robert Walker & Robert Lusk. In the year 1770 this church procured the labors of the Rev. John Simpson from New Jersey. He arrived at Fishing_creek on the 26thof November of that year. He was ordained and installed April 6th 1774 in the pastoral charge by the Presbytery of Orange, which embraced the States of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Mr. Simpson sustained the relation of Pastor to this church in communion with Lower Fishing_creek, afterwards, Richardson; But having withdrawn from that church he continued the Pastor of this church until 1789, when this relation was disolved. He however served the church for one year more and then removed to Pendelton District S.C. where he continued his ministerial labors until his death on February 4th 1808. The congregation remained vacant, with the exception of a few months in 1793, when they were supplied by Mr John Bowman, a licentiate of Orange Presbytery until 1795. In September 1795 the church prefered their call to Mr. William G. Rosebrough a Licentiate of the Presbytery of South Carolina (which was organized in 1785). He took their call under consideration and labored amongst them for two years under considerable infirmity of body and at length was compelled to (return?) their call. In April 1798 this church gave an invitation to Mr. John B. Davies to labor amongst them, as a (supply?). He was a Licentiate of the Presbytery of South Carolina. His labors proving acceptable, this church in union with Richardson presented their calls to Mr Davies to become their pastor. Mr Davies having accepted their calls he was ordained and installed as the Pastor of the two churches May 4th, 1799. His labors were devoted to the two churches for the space of thirty three years, when (1831) the pastoral charge of Richardson was resigned; but that of Fishing_creek retained and still continues (1839). When Mr Davies became Pastor of this church its bunch of Elders were Samuel Neely, David Carr, David Neely, Thomas Neely, Thomas Latta to whom was added in 1801 Mr Hugh Gaston. In 1804 Thomas Neely, Thomas Latta, Hugh Gaston, Josiah Porter, Charles Brown, Wm Walker, D. Davis. In 1808 Thomas Neely, H Gaston, Josiah Porter, Jas Steele, Chs Boyd, Jas Wallis & Samuel Lewis. In 1812 T Neely, H Gaston, J Porter, Ch. Boyd, J. Wallis, S. Lewis, Jas. E. McFadden & John Boyd. In 1820. H Gaston, C. Boyd, S. Lewis, J.E. McFadden, J. Boyd, William Bradford, Edward Crawford, D.A.
