Good afternoon, Listers, DNA testing has become a valuable tool for those who have been unable to prove a relationship by paper documention. Our Weathers/Withers project that was started in the Fall of last year, is showing a perfect match in England for the Recent Ancient Origin test, one and two mutations include Scotland and Ireland. We would really appreciate those with the names above to join our project to help further our search for our heritage. . However, for those of other names, there may be projects already active in the Family Tree DNA Co. To find the list of projects, go to www.familytreedna.com, . click on the right column stating "projects" and then on the letter of your name.or any name you might be interested in. If interested in the Weathers/Withers project, our administrator is William McAdams who can be reached at [email protected] Wishing you the very best, Sarah Withers Keesee
Justice John and Esther Waugh Gaston are interred in Fishing Creek area near Chester/Richland South Carolina. I understand there's are lone graves covered with a concrete slab in the middle of a privately owned field. I'm going to try to go over there this fall to get pictures of it. I'm told I'll need to get permission to visit the grave sites. Does anyone have more information, a picture or anything? Joyce Gaston Reece
Looking for information on Bigham's that lived in Chester County, SC. They would have arrived in this area in the late 1700's. Hi my name is Antoinette Russell Anderson and I have been working on my families histories for awhile . My family was owned by David Chisholme Jr., around 1809/10 he moved into Chester, South Carolina from Louisa county , Virginia. I believe that David Chisholme was a slave trader and sold slaves into New Orleans, he was listed as being in Louisana around the same time of his move to Chester. David Chisholme died around 1816 in Chester SC. His slaves were than left to his brother Thomas and then to his nephew and Thomas' Son-in Law Suprey Chisholme. Here is a list of the slaves belonging to Suprey which includes my Great great grandfather Ned and his brothers William and Dudley and my great great grandmother Julia. Here is a list of the slaves that David owned at the time of his death in 1816: Negroes: Ruben 500 , Gaberiel $600 Ambrose $550, Jessie $600 Archbald $600, Mose Jr. $400 John, $350, Joseph $425 collin $300 Philip $550 Holems 260 Hattan and two male children $750 Bridget and children Hannah and Ned $700 Old Mose's wife and two children $500 sarah $200, Louisa $180 Dolly $425, Nancy $300 An Inventory of the goods and Chattles rights & credits of Suprey Chisholme viz as taken the 5th and 6th of Feby 1834 viz Negroes Major $780, Linsly 325, Tod 650 Wlliam 500, Mary Jane 200, alex 400, Amy 200, Mandy, 150, Chloe 100 Old Chloe 100, Wyatt 740, Violet 450 Dudley 700, Diana 475, Ned 650 Becky 400, Nancy 500, Bob 650 John 650, Georgiana 225, Theodore 200 James 125, Daniel 475, Sila 350 Clarissa 300, Ben 425, Anthony 225 Nancy 175, Daniel 137, Sarah 100 Scylla 450, Alfred 400, Anderson 250 Abrahm 150, Major 140, Bosin 650 Tilla 350, Robert 450,Barnet 225 Peter 175,Patsy,140, Charlotte 100 Aggy,450 ,Harriet 200,Caroline 400 Violet 75, Jim 110, Mary 50, Napeleon 550 I would like to make contact with descendants of these enslaved families. In 1855 Martha Chisholm Lewis wife of Edward Lewis brought her slaves that were willed to her by her father Suprey Chisholm to Gainesville, Florida. After reconstruction many headed for the Northern states. I know that some of them migrated to New York, Ohio, Delaware, Pennyslavania, and there are many Chisholms in the Baltimore area that are from the Chester area and also Pitsburgh, Pa, Marion county, Florida. Several Coats/Coate/Coates families lived throughout the US. Were they related at all? A special effort is being made to test those who might help us find that missing link. New connections made daily! To find out, we need to get more male descendants of Coates/Coats/Coate to take the Y chromosome (DNA) test. Three of my Coats line have taken it (It takes about 10 seconds to swab the inside of your cheek; then it must be mailed to the lab), and lo, we are related, plus we have about ten new, distant relatives. The problem is that there as yet are many branches in this family that would help us solve many family connections, so the links to the other relatives are as yet unknown and the kinship may be back 100s of years! So we need more males to take the test! Only males can participate in the Y Chrom projects, but as long as he is a Coates/Coats/Coate from your line he can take the test for those who are not Coates/Coats/Coate surnamed. This is becoming the resource of first choice for the beginner or seasoned genealogist, so why not add your family line now! Why we do it ! The Y chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged, except for a mutation about every 500 generations. Testing the Y chromosome will provide you with a genetic finger print consisting of 12 or 37 numbers. By comparing this finger print to others with your surname, you can determine if they are related. The objectives of Surname Projects vary. Here are a few: * Identify others who are related * Prove or disprove theories regarding ancestors * Solve brick walls in your research * Determine a location for further research * Validate existing research Often a Surname Project has multiple objectives, and the objectives may even change over the life of the project. Most Surname Projects start with the objective to identify others who are related, and through out the project the other objectives are achieved simply as a result of the project. Current Coates/Coate/Coates males tested, and we have 11 distinct family lines have been identified, plus there are some that have no matches. Test results are posted here: http://www.coatsarchive.us/dna.htm Our Most Wanted DNA lines: http://www.coatsarchive.us/DNAmostwanted.htm For more info regarding the Coats/Coate/Coates DNA tests, go to: http://www.coatsarchive.us/dna.htm Charlotte Coats Coats DNA Project Admin -- Always Remember: Without documentation, genealogy is mythology! Sorry, I sent this the wrong way on my first try. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, May 29, 2006 4:00 PM Subject: Church Cemetary Records I have reports of ancestors buried in several church cemetaries in Chester County. My gggrandfather was Matthew Elder who settled in Chester County after his arrival from Ireland in 1791 following his marriage to Jennie McKay. Most of my info comes from his son, Matthew Elder, Jr., via his autobiography. Churches of interest are Cedar Shoals, Upper Fishing Creek, Richardson's (Lower Fishing Creek), Hopewell, Bethlehem, and Bethlehem Meeting House, reported to be a branch of Catholic. I am interested in any available records of graves of Justice John Gaston, his son Joseph and Joseph's daughter, Esther, who married Daniel Green Stinson. Esther and Daniel's daughter Jane married Matthew Elder, Jr. I would appreciate any burial records anyone could supply about any of the above or their ancestors from South Carolina. I have some info from both "Gaston of Chester" by Chalmers Gaston Davidson and "The Stephenson Family" by J. C. Stephenson, which I would be happy to share. Al Elder [email protected]
JOSEPH5 GASTON (ALEXANDER4, ALEXANDER3, WILLIAM2, JEAN BAPTISTE1)1,2,3,4,5 was born 1739 in County Antrim, Ireland, and died Apr 21, 1823 in Fishing Creek, Chester County, South Carolina. He married MARTHA GASTON6,7 Abt. 1762 in Chester County, South Carolina, daughter of JOHN GASTON and ESTHER WAUGH. She was born Jun 11, 1741 in Ireland or South Carolina or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died Mar 04, 1826 in Chester County, South Carolina. Notes for JOSEPH GASTON (my 5th great grandfather): Joseph is his wife's second cousin once removed. He suffered all the horrors of a famine on board ship while crossing the Atlantic. Three brothers, Joseph, Robert and Matthew Gaston, said to be great grandsons of the first Irish William, emigrated to South Carolina with their sister, Jane Gaston Walker, leaving a fourth brother, Alexander, in Ireland, who was born about 1750 and died about 1840. Of these, Joseph married Martha Gaston, daughter of Justice John Gaston, above. He was a member of the Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church of Chester County, South Carolina. Joseph and Martha were visited by their pastor, Reverend John Simpson in 1775 or 1776. A slave owner. <Connie (also a Justice John Gaston descendant through his daughter Martha who married her probably cousin Joseph Gaston)> Hello Connie: As another descendant of Justice John Gaston, I am interested in your information on Joseph Gaston, husband of Martha Gaston (1741 - 1826), daughter of Justice John. How does this Joseph Gaston fit into the Gaston lineage in the Carolinas? Can you tell us anything about him? (Parents, dates, location....?) Nancy Sicotte
Kirby: No, the Martha ___ McCreary (d. 1866) and Dr. A.J. McCreary (d. 1864) are not the McCrearys I had mentioned. Margaret Gaston (d. 1767), daughter of Justice John Gaston, and her husband, James McCreary are buried, I believe, in the Lower Fishing Creek Cemetery (also known as Richardson's or Burnt Meeting House). There is no church there now. The cemetery is hidden back in the trees, not visible from the road. Thanks for checking your book for the graves of Samuel and Margaret McCreary Telford. Nan
Yes you may send it to the Gaston List...I hope to have it by Wednesday. I will try to join the Gaston List before then but feel free to repost. Kirby Ashe [email protected]
To Jim Webb, Cedar Shoals Prebyterian Church Cemetery (Chester Co) has several Mckeown family members buried their. Do you have their information? Kirby Ashe [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])
