SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Cherokee/72 Surname: Smith ------------------------- All I know about my John Smith is from one of his daughters' obituary and from an 1880 Union County Census. In 1880, John S. Smith, 36, had three daughters and five sons as well as his wife and mother-in-law living with him in Gowdeysville, Union County, SC. I know nothing of his ancestry. When I replied to your message, I did so simply because Union and Cherokee border each other and because I knew that my John Smith had at least visited Texas. Also, Cherokee County had not yet been created in 1845, it wasn't until the 1880s/90s that Cherokee was formed from parts of Spartanburg and Union Counties. I have been unable to find his death certificate in South Carolina, which leads me to think that he may have stayed in Texas, however his wife and at least one daughter stayed in Union County, and his daughter's death certificate says that he died before she did (1926). It may be that they divorsed and she had no idea whether he had died or not. If you can find proof that your John was in Texas before 1880, we'll know that we're not thinking of the same John. If you do find more information on John, and you think it might be the same one, i'll be glad to give you information on his descendants as well as any information I might be able to find with the new information. Thanks!
