The list I have online is a transcription of a transcription of a transcription -- many chances for error ;-) It should provide you with enough information to request copies of his service record from the SC Archives at Columbia which will clarify the actual circumstances of his service. A Thomas J. Lavender, 71 year old white male is listed on page 162 of the Cherokee County census of 1920 as residing in the Limestone Township.
