I have found Cherokee County to be one of the most helpful in South Carolina. When searching deeds the ladies at the deed office are much more helpful than some other nearby counties. I do not know where the marriage liscense records would be help but the Gaffney Library might. Try them, their phone # is 864-487-2711. County information # 864-487-2560. I don't know if either is online. Good luck- Page Lee
I wonder if those that physically conduct research in Cherokee County would take a minute to post to this list a short note about research resources. I'm not asking anyone to volunteer to do lookups (of course that would be nice too) but simply to list the various resources that you have found helpful. Maybe a brief overview of what you have been able to find and where. Who to see there, what to avoid. Addresses and phone numbers would help. Anything that might be useful to someone from out of state who isn't used to the way South Carolina counties keep historical records. Maybe even for folks that have lived in Gaffney all their lives and didn't know a resource was available. I know that the veterans service office has copies of miitary discharge certificates and that they are located in the old hospital building on Limestone St. too. I know this because my discharges are filed there. What I don't know is whether they make those records available to the public and under what circumstances. Will they make a copy by mail request? There's all kinds of information we could put into a "Cherokee County Resources FAQ" Were I traveling in for research I might want to know things like "what are the hours of the local history collection of the public library", "what are the hours at the Family History Center and where are they?", "which office has the cemetery records for xyz cemetery?".... It might also help to know which offices don't have a certain type of record or which office doesn't enjoy visitors... Those of us used to researching in the neighboring NC counties can just go to the local Register of Deeds office and they will point us to death, birth, marriage, deed, military discharges, corporation, etc. records all in one place. When we visit a SC county expecting the same we get very confused. Sometimes we confuse the folks at the SC courthouses too -- they have no idea what we're looking for, and in all fairness to them -- they don't need to. I'd bet that if we made a list of local genealogical resources for Cherokee County that some of the county offices that encounter we out of town genealogists would be willing to give out our list to help folks find what they're looking for. Also, if anyone knows of certain days of the month not to visit certain places that would be helpful. For example, "the first Monday of each month is a very bad time to visit the Cabarrus County NC Register of Deeds. Court is in session and there is no place to park anywhere close." The easier we can make Cherokee County genealogy the more fellow researchers we can expect. With more folks comes more information.... HELP!!!!! THANKS!
