SC Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/CherokeeObits/12 Surname: BROWN, CLAYBROOK, ENGLISH, FINLEY, GAINES, MONTIE, RUSSELL, SMITH, YOUNGBLOOD ------------------------- THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va. Tue., Nov. 8, 1921, p. 1, col. 2 [edited]. Information was received here Sunday evening by telegram to relatives of Mrs. E. H. Gaines, that she died suddenly of heart failure about seven oclock on the evening at the home in Gaffney, S. C. Mrs. Gaines had been ill for several weeks and had recently returned from the hospital. Mrs. C. P. Smith, Mrs. G. M. Finley, sisters and Mr. F. R. Brown a brother of the deceased motored to Danville Sunday night and took the midnight train for Gaffney. She was about 50 years of age. Mrs. Gains is survived by her husband and several children. Among her relatives in Martinsville are her father, Hon. John R. Brown, her sisters, Mrs. Finley, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. S. D. English, Miss Kate Brown and her brother, Mr. F. R. Brown, and a number of nephews and nieces. Mrs. Gaines, who was Miss Alice Brown, daughter of Hon. J. R. Brown, was reared in Martinsville, her parents having removed here from FRANKLIN COUNTY when she was quite a small child. A second notice of her death, two columns long, appeared in THE HENRY BULLETIN, Fri., Nov. 11, p. 1, cols. 4 & 5, edited as follows. (Gaffney, S. C. Ledger, Nov. 8). All Gaffney was shocked Sunday evening when, like a thunderbolt from a clear sky, came the announcement of the sudden death of Mrs. E. H. Gaines, at her home on Victoria Avenue. Mrs. Gaines was 53 years of age. It was eventide when this good woman, who but a moment before had bee cheerfully conversing with her loved ones, passed into the great beyond. Mr. Gaines had only a moment before left her chamber and gone down stairs. Mrs. Ellen Youngblood, her daughter was in the room and had been talking to her mother, who had been encouraging her to accept an invitation to go out to a neighbors to supper. Mr. Youngblood for an instant noted that her mother had ceased talking and turning toward her bed she saw at once that her mother had been stricken. She gave the alarm, but so swift was the work of the death angel that Alice Brown Gains passed away in the arms of her husband without even as much as being able to speak to him. The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Brown of Martinsville, Va. Mr. Brown at one time represented the Fifth District of Virginia in Congress. Mr. and Mrs. Gaines were married in October 1889. She is survived by her husband and seven children, viz: Miss Alice Gaines, Mrs. Henry J. Russell, Mrs. Ellen Youngblood, John, Montie, E. H. Jr. and Wm. Gaines; also by her father and five sisters, Mrs. Chas. Smith of Martinsville, Va.; Mrs. Louis Claybrook of Harrisburg, Va.; Mrs. George M. Finley of Harrisburg, Va.,; Miss Kate Brown of Martinsville; Mrs. Douglas English of Martinsville and one brother, F. R. Brown of Galax, Va. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the residence on Victoria Avenue with interment in Oakland Cemetery.
Becky Thanks. I will be there again. It helps us from out of the area. Sally Roberts Clyo, Ga.
Hi Becky; Great Page! To be more accurate, Cherokee County South Carolina was named for the community of Cherokee Falls and the community of Cherokee Falls was named for the Cherokee Nation. By saying the county was named for the Cherokee Nation we miss that all important historical debate at the time of whether the new county would be Limestone County of Cherokee County. Those in favor of forming a county were receiving opposition from those on the north side of the Broad River. By suggesting the name Cherokee County, they were able to influence the community of Cherokee Falls to support the county formation. (source - newspapers of the day) Also, you may want to refer to the Cherokee as the "Cherokee Nation" and not "Cherokee Indians" -- have gotten angry emails before for making that error. :) Please add the Cherokee County SCGenWeb Project to your list of societies for Cherokee County. Is your Moss Family located in Cherokee County South Carolina? I am seeking information about my Moss Family of which I have little to no information. Robert S. Moss married to Emma, (I found a Robert S. Moss in the 1920 Cherokee County South Carolina census; Robert S. Moss, M/ W/ 58/ Cherokee). I only know about two of their children, Brown Moss, and Charlie Robinson Moss. Brown Moss married Maggie; they remained in the York and King Mountain area. They may have a son, Earl B. Moss. Charlie Robinson Moss (01 Jan. 1881-31 May 1940) married Hattie M. Allen from the Bayboro Community in Horry County SC. It appears they relocated a few times between York/King Mountain area and Horry County SC/Columbus County NC area. They settled in Columbus County NC where they remained for the rest of their life.
That area in the northern part of present Cherokee County would have been York County then. The York County SCGenWeb pages have some good census resources listed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~scyork/Census/index.html and http://www.rootsweb.com/~scyork/ Also look at the Census Search page of the York SCGenWeb Archives project at http://www.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/scyork/scyork.pl I didn't find Martha Murphy there but the other names may ring a bell for you. -----Original Message----- From: JCBridges@erols.com [mailto:JCBridges@erols.com] Sent: Saturday, December 02, 2000 12:45 PM To: SCCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCCherok-L] Martha Murphy Posted on: Cherokee Co. Bobbie Humphries Parker: I received your post on the SCCherokee list and not sure to whom you were requesting to share info. I have compiled some information concerning, William, John, and David Humphries who imigrated from England on the 6th day of January 1763. I have been unable to trace John or David but William Humphries married Marianna Walker in 1767 in Virginia. He died in Cleveland county NC on 23 August 1841. If this is the William Humphries that your search has found, I have additional information on his decendants but not ancestors. Hope that you have a nice, lovely day and smile the time away while you search. Don I am searching for information on Lona Jolley. She was a full blooded Cherokee who was the second wife of Charlie Roberts. I took some pictures of the Jolley graves (her brothers) when I was there. I will go through them and see if I can find your family. Sally Roberts
Cherokee County was not formed until 1898. Look in the Union, Spartanburg, or York County records for this couple. However- marriage, birth and death records were not kept in the state until 1911 or later (depending on record needed). Check deeds and probate record for hints. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shannan" <shan@pacifier.com> To: <SCCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 17, 2000 9:09 AM Subject: [SCCherok-L] Owen Brady and Lucy Riley > Posted on: Cherokee Co. Posted on: Cherokee Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Cherokee/72 Surname: Smith ------------------------- All I know about my John Smith is from one of his daughters' obituary and from an 1880 Union County Census. In 1880, John S. Smith, 36, had three daughters and five sons as well as his wife and mother-in-law living with him in Gowdeysville, Union County, SC. I know nothing of his ancestry. When I replied to your message, I did so simply because Union and Cherokee border each other and because I knew that my John Smith had at least visited Texas. Also, Cherokee County had not yet been created in 1845, it wasn't until the 1880s/90s that Cherokee was formed from parts of Spartanburg and Union Counties. I have been unable to find his death certificate in South Carolina, which leads me to think that he may have stayed in Texas, however his wife and at least one daughter stayed in Union County, and his daughter's death certificate says that he died before she did (1926). It may be that they divorsed and she had no idea whether he had died or not. If you can find proof that your John was in Texas before 1880, we'll know that we're not thinking of the same John. If you do find more information on John, and you think it might be the same one, i'll be glad to give you information on his descendants as well as any information I might be able to find with the new information. Thanks!
