    3. Hello Liters, In 2000 I received and posted this web sit on several list and boards. I think it would be a good time to post it once more to make new List members aware of the need to protect the final resting place of our ancestor, friends, loved ones, and valuable data. I know many of you will get this several times. I am not sorry as this is an important issue. Sometimes we need more than one time to remind us to act. Doris "I know that most of you are into genealogy as I am and if you have ever visited an older cemetery, you know what deplorable condition many of them are in. Are you aware that many states permit building on cemeteries if they are beyond a certain age? Firms will bulldoze right over headstones without so much as an "I'm sorry that we're burying your ancestors and their history will be permanently lost but that's business." It's too late for many family gravesites and older cemeteries but something can be done to preserve what is left and I would appreciate it if you would take just a moment of your time to help. I have just read and signed the online petition: "National Cemetery Protection Act" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.petitiononline.com/sg0001/petition.html I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself. Whether or not you feel that this is an important issue, I would also appreciate it very much if you would pass this message along to anyone you think might add their support to the cause. I think that preserving cemeteries is an important issue. It seems a shame that stones that have withstood the elements for so long are destroyed by man by bulldozing or vandalism. Lesley" http://www.petitiononline.com/sg0001/petition.html

    3. I wonder if those that physically conduct research in Cherokee County would take a minute to post to this list a short note about research resources. I'm not asking anyone to volunteer to do lookups (of course that would be nice too) but simply to list the various resources that you have found helpful. Maybe a brief overview of what you have been able to find and where. Who to see there, what to avoid. Addresses and phone numbers would help. Anything that might be useful to someone from out of state who isn't used to the way South Carolina counties keep historical records. Maybe even for folks that have lived in Gaffney all their lives and didn't know a resource was available. I know that the veterans service office has copies of miitary discharge certificates and that they are located in the old hospital building on Limestone St. too. I know this because my discharges are filed there. What I don't know is whether they make those records available to the public and under what circumstances. Will they make a copy by mail request? There's all kinds of information we could put into a "Cherokee County Resources FAQ" Were I traveling in for research I might want to know things like "what are the hours of the local history collection of the public library", "what are the hours at the Family History Center and where are they?", "which office has the cemetery records for xyz cemetery?".... It might also help to know which offices don't have a certain type of record or which office doesn't enjoy visitors... Those of us used to researching in the neighboring NC counties can just go to the local Register of Deeds office and they will point us to death, birth, marriage, deed, military discharges, corporation, etc. records all in one place. When we visit a SC county expecting the same we get very confused. Sometimes we confuse the folks at the SC courthouses too -- they have no idea what we're looking for, and in all fairness to them -- they don't need to. I'd bet that if we made a list of local genealogical resources for Cherokee County that some of the county offices that encounter we out of town genealogists would be willing to give out our list to help folks find what they're looking for. Also, if anyone knows of certain days of the month not to visit certain places that would be helpful. For example, "the first Monday of each month is a very bad time to visit the Cabarrus County NC Register of Deeds. Court is in session and there is no place to park anywhere close." The easier we can make Cherokee County genealogy the more fellow researchers we can expect. With more folks comes more information.... HELP!!!!! THANKS!

    3. I have found Cherokee County to be one of the most helpful in South Carolina. When searching deeds the ladies at the deed office are much more helpful than some other nearby counties. I do not know where the marriage liscense records would be help but the Gaffney Library might. Try them, their phone # is 864-487-2711. County information # 864-487-2560. I don't know if either is online. Good luck- Page Lee

    3. Hello Sally: The information that you will need will be located in the Court Of Probate Records. These records are located in the old hospital building on North Limestone Street Ext. The office of Judge W. R. Douglas is located in the basement. They are very helpful in locating things that you may need to copy. Hope that you have a very successful search here in the fair city of Gaffney. Have a nice day. 3. You definitely want to see the records at the Family History Center at the Mormon Church and also the local history collection of the Public Library. Most South Carolina counties do not have open public records like some states (i.e. NC) where you can visit the Register of Deeds and then browse the files. I would bet that there are some records kept in the county and I think they would be at the Health Department. I've found the government of Cherokee County to be far from cooperative in the past though.... Good luck. -----Original Message----- From: Sally & Carroll [mailto:neenee@alltel.net] Sent: Wednesday, January 03, 2001 5:46 PM To: SCCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Patsy Holt is temp. offline - computer failure RE: [SCCherok-L] How would I order marriage certificate? 3. A special note to those list readers who get help from Patsy Holt (the SCGenWeb Cherokee County coordinator) in Gaffney. Patsy's computer has unexpectedly gone down (we think it may have been struck by lightening or a power surge) and we are working feverishly to get it fixed for her so she can get back to helping with lookups and knowing who to call and where to reach them. Hopefully (barring having to buy her a new motherboard) she'll be back online early next week. I don't know nearly as much as she does about local sources there and I'm not in Cherokee County but, I'll try to answer what I can while she's missing her email. Sally & Carroll; I'll call Patsy and ask if she knows how to get such documents in Gaffney and if any other reader has the right place to write maybe we'll see it here on the list. It will depend slightly on whether you need a certified true copy for some special purpose or whether you want a genealogists photocopy. I understand that the local Health Department keeps some such records on file. I am accustomed to having to get them from Columbia but then I haven't had to look up many marriages in Cherokee County. I really do prefer the North Carolina research methods ;-) In any event, I'll talk with Patsy before Friday and post her comments back to the list.
