Posted on: Cherokee Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Cherokee/10126 Surname: Phelps, Williams ------------------------- I went to the Library today to try and find some information on Harriet Phelps parents. The only possible conection was Abijah Phelps in the 1840 census of Spartanburg Co.,SC Page 166 (living very close to Levi Smith who married Temperance Williams the sister of Noah Williams who married Harriet Phelps). Abijah was listed as 40-50 years old, his wife was 30-40. They had 1 son under 5 and 1 dau. 5-10, 2 daughters 10-15 and 1 dau. 15-20. (Harriet would have been about 10 years old) I could not find Abijah Phelps in the 1850 Census, but according to the mortalaty census for St. Clair Co.,Alabama Abijah Phelps age 62 of Conn. died in April 1860 of Pneumonia. I checked the 1860 census for St. Clair Co.,AL and found only one Phelps family listed on page 179 & 180 as follows: #Phelps, Ann 49 SC Farmer-Value of Real Estate $500, Personal $278 " Jane 32 SC " William 19 SC " Abija 8 AL (male) " Rosebun 5 AL (male) This should be the same Abijah listed in the 1840 census of Spartanburg Co.,SC I also checked New York since in the 1900 census of Cherokee Co.,SC Harriet listed her father as being born in New York and found a Abijah Phelps in the 1850 Census for Genessee Co.,NY Page 327. There was also another listing for a Abijah Phelps in the 1790 Montgomery Co.,NY Census Page 112. He had 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16 and 2 females. There were several Abijah Phelps listed on the Ancestral File in Conn. & Mass. in the 1600 & 1700's. The IGI listed a Abijah Phelps who married Susannah Miller on May 19 1819 in Hartland, Hartford, Conn. I hope this helps. Johnny Williams
Hi Johnny, Who are your Bridges...we are tied into William Bridges, Sr. and Jr....William's daughter Nancy married John Huskey, also the Scruggs several times over...particularly interested in Bridges since John married, or at least had children with a Cynthia Minerva Greenleaf Hardin after Nancy died. Posted on: Cherokee Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Cherokee/10125 Surname: Hammett ------------------------- Thank you Johnny for that information. I am back to William W. Hammett (b. 1799) who married Martha "Patsy" Lnu. Not sure if they were born in VA or Spartanburg (Cherokee Co.). They raised their children in Spartanburg. Children were: Thomas (b. 1799) who married Lucy (Richardson), John (b. 1810) who married Sarah Brannon, Wiley, Pinkney, Frances (male), James,& Cynthia who married a Bullington. I have found nothing to tie this family into the Underwood Hammett tree. Also connected to this branch (at least thru marriage) is Daniel Hammett (b. @1777) who married Mary (Polly) Vandiver b. 1779. Children were: Moses, Harrington, John, James, Coleman & Elizah. I would be very interested (and grateful) for anything you can share with me. I have started researching other Hammett's that came from SC in the hopes of learing more. My tree desends thru Thomas, to Barham Ellis (old "Barr") who lived on Lookout Mountain, AL at one time, then to Warren Hammett. Some of family stayed in SC, some moved on to GA, TX, AL & OK. I was born in OK, my grandparents in GA. Two other males in our tree I'm searching for are: William A. (Asbury) & brother James W (born 1820 & 1828). They spelled their last name Hammitt. Their decendants also lived on Lookout Mt. are connected somehow. Any info you could share would be most appreciated. I would be happy to send you a more detailed tree. Thank you Pat My address is: Pat Robinette 7890 Spring St., #18B Long Beach, CA 90815

Posted on: Cherokee Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Cherokee/10119 Surname: ------------------------- Hi Pat, My Family comes though Jesse Hammett & Anna Cook of Spartanburg Couny, S.C. (Which is now part of Cherokee County, S.C.) Thier daughter Sarah Adaline Hammett, who is my 2nd great grandmother, married Oliver Perry Williams about 1845. I have a picture of her. Her mother is said to be part Indian. There is a good book on the Hammetts which traces them back several generations to Virginia. Jesse is said to be the son of Charles & Nancy Hammett and have the following brothers; John, Daniel, Ben & Charles. I know the location of Jesse's Land & Grist Mill which was located on Island Creek. The land later was purchased by Oliver Perry Williams's first cousin Drury Williams (his wife Jane Potter being a granddaughter of Jesse Hammett). She later devided the land into seven parts for her children. I would be happy to help you on your family, but would need to know more concerning your ancestor. Johnny

The cemetery is about 1 mile from the NC/SC state line. It is closer to Grover, NC than Blackburg, SC. Elsie Hardin, who lives next to the cemetery did the survey I think, (If she is still living). I was b. and reared in Grover, NC and have been to that cemetery many times. Interstate # 85 is about 2 miles from the cemetery.

Nancy, my husband's mother Ree Cooper, was the daughter of a John Cooper, son of Doc. Cooper, buried with his wife Rhoda, also at Providence... I have no idea if they are related, but I suspect so. Marshall Cooper who lives on the Broad River in Gaffney has tracked the Cooper line pretty well...give him a try at A1996rk@mindspring.com Judy Huskey always looking for the parents and descendents of John Huskey and Cynthia Minerva Greenleaf Hardin in now Cherokee County 1820's.....1870's...
