Christopher I have not been able to find any Birth or Marriage Records for my Roberts family. They are buried in unmarked graves in the Piedmont Baptist Cemetery. Charley Roberts 2nd wife has a marker and is in a different cemetery than him and Ola. I wrote to the Piedmont Baptist Church for records but have had no response yet (it has only been 8 months). Have you tried Dr. Floyds list of Cemeteries? Sally neenee@alltel.net
<<"What type of records does Cherokee Co., SC have. Did they have a birth register before the 1915 SC Law for birth certificates... What about marriage records for Cherokee County and cemetery records??? I am trying to research this for a friend and since I live in Maryland it is hard...">> ------------------------------------------ * South Carolina birth records after the early 1910's are located at the state archives in Columbia. Those few records kept at the county level are difficult to get to at best. If anyone has had luck getting records locally please tell the list how. * Marriage records are not as hard to get hold of. Located in the office of the Judge of Probate. Wills are not too difficult either. * Cemetery records are very good resources here and can be found in hard copy at the public library with some transcriptions online. The largest cemeteries though have not been transcribed yet. * The local LDS Family History Center has a very good collection of death records from local funeral homes. Always a good place to check. * Archives of the local newspapers are available on fische at the public library. Great source for old obits - truly hard searching if you don't have a date. * Census records are not too useful as the county wasn't formed until 1897. For census see Spartanburg, York, and Union Counties. ------------------------------ A post to this list for a specific local look-up will often generate a good deed from one of the researchers in Gaffney. Any other ideas from the readers of this list -- what resources do y'all use? CoachT
I too am looking for a Roberts family in the area. Julia Ellen Roberts married A. Clinton Gidney in York District (now Cherokee County) on 31 August 1876. One reference I read indicated that her father owned a store on the site of the old Gaffney Post Office. According to an 1894 map of Gaffney, In the block between Frederick and Robinson along the north side of Granard were two large dwellings, a cobbler, and a produce dealer. Any information re: Ms Roberts is appreciated. Posted on: Cherokee Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Cherokee/10142 Surname: Hammett ------------------------- Hi Johnny - just reviewing old messages & thought I would drop a line. Recently Susan Brock Booker posted a message that she thinks Daniel's tree (b. 1777) might be the son of Charles & Nancy too. There were six sons - and one was unknown. If Daniel turns out to be correct, along with your Jesse, then I think the "unknown" son will turn out to be my William (b.@ 1771) who married Martha "Patsy" Lnu. The two families stayed close & connect when a Hammett from Daniel's tree(Cenie) married a Hammett (Julius)from William's tree. In recent info I have received on mine - it has Martha (wife of Wm.) leaving an estate of "approx" 150 acres (I can't recall the correct figure off hand),and it was on the Pacolet river, I think near Fairforest. A lot of Hammett's settled around the same area. I really am starting to think all our Hammett's are going to connect. Charles Brookings Hammett is another Hammett that hasn't connected to any tree yet - I think he will turn out to be the son of one of the Hammett's listed above. He also had land on the Pacolet river, & was buried in small Hammett cemetery on his land. The one sibling of my Thomas (b. 1799) son of William, that little is accounted for, is his brother James (b. @ 1800-1810), who wasn't living in the area when his mother died. I think this will turn out to be the James (b. @1801) who married Clarissa, & after their children were born, they moved to DeKalb AL. I know I'm doing a lot of "guessing" here - . If you find any other info - please keep in touch. thanks - Pat

I thought that HERITAGE PAPERS went out of business when Mrs. Warren stopped publishing Puzzlers the end of 1998. Not so!! I recently found the new websites for HERITAGE PAPERS as well as for FAMILY PUZZLERS, TNG, the monthly magazine edited by Mrs. Warrens daughter Amy Warren Sanders! Most of the items that Heritage Papers used to advertise in their annual catalog are still available, including back issues of the quarterly magazines GEORGIA GENEALOGIST and CAROLINA GENEALOGIST, lots of historic maps, as well as source materials for Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. Some bound volumes of Family Puzzlers are still available. For Heritage Papers, go to http://www.galaxymall.com/books/heritagepapers For Family Puzzlers, The Next Generation, go to http://www.galaxymall.com/books/familypuzzlers I just thought youd like to know, I did!! SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Cherokee/10133 Surname: Jones, Sprouse ------------------------- Donna, I'm not sure if I've discussed Joneses and Sprouses before with you or not. My ggrandfather, William Henry (Billy) Jones, married Martha Sprouse. In addition, his aunt, Caroline Jones, married John Sprouse. These Joneses were first found in Draytonville township (formerly Union County now Cherokee) and later wound up around White Stone in Spartanburg County. I know that Martha's mother was Mahala Sprouse, daughter of James Sprouse. I am trying to tie them to Vincent Sprouse if possible. Billy's father was Henry Jones. I have been unsuccessful at going back further here but believe they may be tied to the Charles and John G. Jones group (Charles founded Jonesville, John was his brother. I tend to think John may be the line as there is no mention of a Henry in the fairly well documented Charles line). Would be interested to hear about your Joneses and Sprouses and see if there are ties.
