    1. [SCCherok-L] Calling all PENNINGTONs
    2. Since most all of us Cherokee County PENNINGTONs are descended from Levi Sr., Levi Jr., and Isaac PENNINGTON, I would like to invite all PENNINGTONs and other interested parties of Cherokee County to visit our PENNINGTON website at: http://www.members.home.net/bobpenn1/ The info has been collected over the past 15 years and I am sure there likely are some errors. Please send me your comments and corrections. You will note that much of the info is referenced to Spartanburg and Union Counties since Cherokee County has only existed since 1897 (formed from parts of Spartanburg, Union, and York Counties). Would like to hear from you even if you don't have comments or corrections for the website. Best Regards, Bobby Pennington Charleston, SC (Born and raised in Cherokee County)

    3. Have to jump in here with a distant but maybe possible relationship I have a Cynthia Minerva Greenleef Hardin who showed up at the home of William Bridges, Sr in the York area about 1850. She is in the census with a John Huskey and Nancy Bridges. In the next census she has a child that the census taker lists as Reuben Huskey, Nancy is still alive. Read what you want into this, it could be an error on the recorders part, she might have been a widow needing a place to stay....etc, blah, blah... who knows? However after Nancy dies, John and Cynthia either marry or stay together and have three more children. Cynthia is the mystery woman to be sure...what Hardin was she married to, is she kin the the Bridges? If this fits in anywhere I would be most appreicative of your thoughts Judy Huskey in raining at last Florida ----- Original Message ----- From: <genladymomof5@yahoo.com> To: <SCCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 10:37 AM Subject: [SCCherok-L] Re: Earls - Moss > > I received your message and was wonderful to hear from another cousin!I am familiar with William M Earls 1839-1917 > husband of (1)Jane Roark, mother of 5 children:Daniel J. > "Danny",George,Charles,Lizzy and Dinah Earls.(2)Rebecca > Hardin mother of 4 children:William Pinkney(Big Will), > Margaret Avalonia"Loni",Alice(Sis)Earls. > William M Earls 1839-1917 was son of Bailus and Sarah > James Earls and they are all 3 buried at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, along with Nancy Earle,d/o Bailus and > Susannah Catherine Roark Earle,consort(1st wife)of Daniel > Earls, born 1829 & s/o Bailus captured and died 1 April 1865 > in The Elmira Civil War Prison Camp in New York.William M > Earls' son Big Will and his wife Hattie Mae Lanier Earls and an infant dau Ruby are buried there too. > From what child of William are you descended from??I don't have much info about his 2 oldest daughters:Lizzy & > Dinah. We have an annual Earls Reunion about first week of October and some of his descendants attend. My address is > P.O.Box 1235 Gaffney,S.C 29342-1235 if you would like to contact me for more information. > Let me know if there is any pacific info you need > and keep in touch!!! 1. [SCCherok-L] Re: Earls - Moss
    2. My lineage is as follows: +My father is Gene Douglas Harris +His mother is Wilma Mae Moss Harris +Her mother is Eunice Mae Earls Moss +Her father is Charlie Earls +His father is Will Earls Charlie Earls is supposedly a result of a brief affair between Will Earls and Marthie Varrisie. Charlie was born on May 29, 1885 and died on June 16, 1962. Marthie Varrisie was (I believe) born in 1850 and died September 13, 1927. She married Danny Earls after Charlie was born and Danny was passed off as Charlie's father. The affair between Marthie V. and Will is not common knowledge. Danny was born August 10, 1870 and died January 20, 1951. I do not know for sure how accurate the information on dates is because they were given to me from another source. My Granny Moss, Eunice Earls Moss, was born at Will's house which had an old grave on the right side of the drive of Mr. Jones and his family. Jones fell of a horse during the Civil War when he bumped into a tree striking the ground and died, but Will removed the headstone. I have Thomas DeKalb Earls down as having been born October 21, 1835 and died on February 20, 1915. Have you ever heard that story about how hi! s Civil War rifle used to hang in someone's house, but then someone asked to borrow it and they never brought it back? My dad is curious to know why Thomas served for Georgia during the Civil War and not SC. He said he was never sure if he found the right record b/c it was for GA, but we know now it is correct. I was mistaken, my dad says it was William who was wounded at Antietam. I have William down as being born October 28, 1839 and died on October 2, 1917. I have him down as being the brother of Thomas Dekalb Earls and the husband of Rebecca Hardin Earls, as well as being buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Because Charlie is not an acknowledged child of Will's, I am not sure exactly who I am descended from but I think you might can figure it out. Danny Earls is supposed to be related somehow to Will Earls, because after Danny and Marthie married, Will played a role in my Granny Moss's life. I have records of all the Earls' buried at Antioch. There is an ! unidentified marker next to William at Antioch. Do you know who is there? Please be in touch. My email is spie11@yahoo.com if you want it. Love, Morgan

    2. It is late at night so I only browsed your query. I had a great (several greats) uncle named Thomas DeKalb Earls who lived in Cherokee County and I believe was shot at Antietam. I know of an Aunt Ella as well. I just wanted to reply because my family are both Earls and Mosses and the two had a lot of relations between them. Please be in touch because you are obviously my distant family. I am a descendant of Thomas's brother Will Earls.

    3. Renita, I can see from your email address that you're about 2 hrs from York, SC. I suggest you start there at the York Historical Center, located on 212 E. Jefferson St in the old high school. Or if you can't get there, call them at 803-684-7262 and ask for Heather South. There is a Bullock's Creek Presbyterian Ch and old cemetery on Hgw 49 from Union to Charlotte, just 10 mi e. of Union, and in S.W. York Co. There is an indexed listing of graves for this cemetery at the History Center, plus census data and access to a Mr Hart's 30 yrs of genealogy in the county. Good luck. 3. Posted on: Cherokee Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Cherokee/10145 Surname: Franklin County ------------------------- Cherokee County SC was not formed at the time you reference but the area around Cowpens was at that time Spartanburg County South Carolina. This area was never part of Georgia but was in early Colonial times part of Virginia (very early) and a combined Carolina. Part of the county was disputed as being Old Tryon North Carolina. Cherokee County SC was formed from parts of York, Spartanburg, and Union Counties in 1897. The old Franklin County of Georgia did extend into present South Carolina but not as far east as present Cherokee County. For the most part, as I understand, Franklin County was drawn from the Cherokee lands much later (1784) than the early Cherokee lived in present Cherokee County SC. Hope this helps a little and maybe someone can help you find that Cowpens area connection. You'll certainly want to explore Spartanburg County as well. Black and his wife, Sarah Montgomery Black of Blacksburg. Sarah's parents had a sizable farm and real estate in downtown Blacksburg around the turn of the century. Her father died in 1917 and her mother moved to Simpsonville to live with my grandmother. Sarah and her husband, I believe lived on the Blacksburg farm for a number of years and were still residing there in 1940. Sarah had sisters that married into the Boyd, Morrow and Jones families. She also had a brother E.A. Montgomery of York, SC. I'm hoping to locate any information on the children of Sarah and Clarence and who his family was.
