    1. Re: [SCCHARLE] Joseph Moore son of James Moore
    2. Hi Carol, Thanks for posting your interest in the Moore family. James MOORE, Jr. (the second Gov. James MOORE) did indeed marry a woman named Elizabeth. It was once thought that her maiden name was Neufville, but according to "The First Governor Moore and His Children" by Mabel L. Webber (SCH&GS Magazine, pp. 193-194) she has been identified as a Beresford. Below is an excerpt from that publication concerning Elizabeth's identity: "The second governor James Moore had a wife Elizabeth, apparently the mother of all his children. Tradition has said she was Elizabeth Neufville but this is hardly possible, as the Neufvilles seem not to have been here so early. Richard Beresford in his will dated 1715 bequeaths to 'My Brothers and Sisters-in-law, Collo: James Moore and Elizabeth his wife, and Nathaniel Ford and his wife, a gold ring each'; and John Beresford, his son, in his will, 1739, mentions among others, Aunts Mrs. Sarah Trott, and Mrs. Hallam Delamere, Uncle John Cooke, and Aunts Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Mary Ford. Col. Wm. Rhett of England and South Carolina married Sarah Cooke, daughter of Edward Cooke of Bentley, England. She married 2nd Nicholas Trott. Sarah Cooke, granddaughter of Edward Cooke, married in South Carolina January , 1711/12, Richard Beresford, Esq., who died in 1721. Their son, John Beresford, born 1712, will 1739, calls Sarah Trott his aunt [she was his grandaunt] and Richard Beresford calls Col. James Moore and Elizabeth his wife, brother-in-law and sister. Mary Beresford is shown by the register of St. Thomas and St. Denis's Parish (printed) to have married Richard King and, after his death, Nathaniel Ford. As these are the only authentic references yet found concerning the wife of the second Governor James Moore, it would appear that she was the sister of Richard Beresford who made his will in 1715, and died in 1721. James Moore and his wife Elizabeth had issue: I. James d. in 1771. II. Jehu d. in 1744, s. p. III. John d. in 1762. IV. Margaret 1707-1775. V. Mary m. in 1744, John Postell. V. Elizabeth living in 1744 (will of Jehu Moore)." I do not have anything else regarding the Postell children, but I will see what I can find. I am so glad you inquired about James and Elizabeth Moore - had I not checked my paperwork, I would have continued to miss something pertinent to my own line. Mabel Webber points out the relationship between Richard Beresford's wife, Sarah Cooke, and her aunt, Sarah (Cooke) Rhett Trott. Sarah Cooke (the aunt) and her first husband, Col. William Rhett, were my 7th great-grandparents. Their daughter, Catherine Rhett married Roger Moore, brother of the second Governor James Moore. Let's see, that would make James Moore's wife Elizabeth (assuming she was the daughter of Richard Beresford) the first cousin once removed of Catherine, the wife of James' brother Roger Moore! I think! In any event, until today, I had missed the fact that Sarah Trott even had a niece, so I have 'discovered' another piece of my family puzzle. Thanks.
