If you can get ahold of Hagey's book about the Jews in Charleston (naturally, I cannot recall the title just now and am dashing out the door for a miserable dental appt), do so. It is wonderful. Most of his material comes from Elzas' Jews of SC. The 100 year battle between the reform and orthodox Jews in Charleston reminds me of John STeinbeck's The Roque Wars. A synagogue divided over whether to play the organ or not. I have ancestors on both sides of the battle.
