FPC is Free Person of Color. Many of the refugees from Santo Domingo were of mixed ancestry. There is a miniature portrait believed to be either Jean Pierre Esnard or John Anthony Barbot (married to Antoinette Esnard) in the Gibbes Art Gallery in Charleston. I quote from "The Miniature Portrait Collection of the Carolina Art Association," "Vallee's portrayal is an unidealized one which emphasizes the sitter's dark coloring." By using the term "unidealized," the writer is reminding us that per the fashion of the day, an "idealized" portrait would have made the sitter appear to be very fair in complexion.
