African American BRABHAM Grand Reunion Continues in Denmark, SC 1-4 July, VOORHEES College Reunion Heads to CHARLESTON and SEA ISLANDS 4th of JULY - Cousin Judy Brabham writes and tells me she heard long-distance about our African American BRABHAM Family reunion in Denmark, SC. >From the ORANGEBURG TIMES AND DEMOCRAT news - July 1, 2, or 3, 2000 The article also mentions good ol' BUFORD'S BRIDGE. I believe that's the old name for BAMBERG, SC, which I deliberately passed through back in 1979. I remember I took a photo of orange tiger lilies in a field. The following is from the article: "DESCENDANTS OF SLAVES FROM BUFORD'S BRIDGE PLAN GRAND REUNION" "More than 200 descendants of slaves from the Brabham Plantation of Buford's Bridge will converge upon Denmark this weekend for a highly anticipated grand reunion they hope will be the first of many.... " More from the African American BRABHAM Reunion article: "Sojourner-Simmons said the search for all branches of African-American Brabhams descending from the plantation has been successful and the family is "going to keep in touch" with those who will be unable to attend the weekend event." "Brabham-Bookhart, whose paternal great-grandfather, James, was born on the plantation in 1818, said the search - even conducted over the Internet - has yieled results." "Buford's Bridge, the oldest community in Bamberg County, holds several hundred years of history including what was once a sprawling slave plantation. Established in the late 1770's, the pre-Civil War settlement of Buford's Bridge is located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 301 and 302 south of Bamberg." "Reunion activities will include a welcome and reception at Massachusetts Hall on the campus of Denmark's Voorhees College Saturday, July 1. Sunday worship services will be held 11 a.m. at Honey Ford Baptist Church in Denmark, followed by dinner. A family picnic is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Rivers Bridge Park in the Buford Bridge community. A banquet, featuring Denmark native and University of South Carolina black history professor Dr. Cleveland Sellers as speaker, is planned for 8 p.m. Monday at Massachusetts Hall." "On July 4, the family plans to take a trip to the sea islands near Charleston where many slaves went before migrating to the North." Thanks to Mr. Joe Jones in Orangeburg SC for sharing this text.
