J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. (since 1865) 232 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401 843-723-2524 James A. McAlister. Inc 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407 843-766-1365 McAlister-Smith 150 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC 29401 843-722-8371 W. M. Smith Funeral Homes 2 Radcliffe Street, Charleston, SC 29401 843-722-3676 The only information I have on the Smith Funeral Home is that it has been in operation for a very long time. Several years ago the McAlister Funeral Home, which had been in existence for several generations of that family, split. One of the younger McAlister family members formed a new business on Savannah Highway. The old McAlisters took in a new partner named Smith (from upstate) and remained in operation at their familiar location on Wentworth Street and a branch East of the Cooper in Mt. Pleasant. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that the old records would have remained at the Wentworth Street location. As for records at Stuhr's, some may have been lost in a fire. I seem to recall there was a terrible fire at their location in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Not real sure about that. Hope this helps. linda mhoose@sc.rr.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <SUMR897@aol.com> To: <SCCHARLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 03, 2000 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [SCCHARLE] grasping at straws ....PLEASE HELP > Hi.....I have heard during my research that Smiths was one of the original > funeral homes.
