Betty: I hope this helps at least a little. It appears we are both descended from Nicholas Maham, you through Hezekiah and I through his sister, Elizabeth, whose daughter, Elizabeth Cook, married Joshua John Ward, my ggg grandfather. Does it contain anyone in your line beyond Mary Maham and George Haig? I have not had good luck finding information on the Haig family. Can you help in that regard? I have sent this to the list hoping that it also might be of use to someone else. Can anyone help fill out this line? Anyone have earlier Mahams? WARD: Joshua was a Captain in Ward's Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers. He entered service at Camp Weston, S.C. January 20, 1862, and was paroled in 1863-1864 because of ill health. Just barely avoiding capture by Federal forces approaching Brook Green, he put his family on a stern-wheeler river boat named "Pilot Boy", mis-directing pursuers by saying they were going to Winyah Bay and then up the Pee Dee River (North) to Marlboro County. Instead, they left for Europe on the sailing ship "Asia", running the blockade in July, 1864, and arrived in Liverpool July 31, 1864. Ward's Battery of Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers (SCV), was mustered into Confederate service by Col. A.M. Manigault at Camp Weston, All Saint's Parish, Waccamaw, Jan. 20, 1862. Joshua Ward was captain; Mayham Ward was 1st Lieutenant; P.R. Lachicott was Jr. 1st Lieutenant; J. J. Wortham was 2nd Lieutenant. It was attached to the 10th Regiment, S.C.V., and at the reorganization in April 1862, it was detached from the 10th Regiment and thereafter served as an independent battery. The company was made up of men from Georgetown and Horry Counties. They were assigned to the duty of protecting the salt works along the ocean front where salt was obtained by evaporating sea water. They had several clashes with Federal troops landed from ships. Notes for ELIZABETH RYAN MORTIMER: Buried in Stuttgart, Germany. Judging by date of her death and that of her infant son, Andrew, she may have died from complications following childbirth. Since the three older children were listed on their father's French passport and Andrew was not, we may assume he was born after the family reached their destination (Stuttgart) shown on the passport.
