I am descended from Edward Pinckney who married Jane Smith and bore Mary E. Pinckney (b. ca. March 2, 1832 in Charleston, d. August 7, 1912 in New York City). On a visit to Charleston (one of my favorite places) in September, I found the headstones for Edward Rutledge Pinckney (b. 2/22/1800, d. 9/1/1832) and his sister Mary Pinckney (b. 3/21/1804, d. 1/24/1822) and those of their parents, Major General Thomas Pinckney and Frances Motte Middleton Pinckney, in St. Philips Church cemetery. At the SC HistoricaI Society I also found a St. Philip's Parish Register reference to Edward Rutledge Pinckney's 11/9/1800 baptism. Also in the St. Philip's Parish Registry is a record of the April 9, 1800 baptism of Jane Smith, daughter of John Rutledge Smith and Susannah Smith. Same parish and same birth year as Edward Rutledge Pinckney. What I don't know is whether my Edward Pinckney is the above-referenced Edward Rutledge Pinckney or whether my Jane Smith is the above-referenced Jane Smith. Does anyone have information that would help me make the connection? Is there any record of Mary E. Pinckney's birth as daughter of Edward Pinckney and Jane Smith? What confuses me is a mention in various on-line communications and the IGI of a Mary Elliott Pinckney, b. 2/4/1833 in Beaufort, d. 8/7/1912 in Charleston. This is same date of death as my Mary E. Pinckney, but my Mary Pinckney (Scott) definitely died in NYC. Kirk Gulden
