I am new to this list and am researching my grgrgrandfather Joseph Prevost. According to family lore, he was born in Martinique (though it may be Saint Domingue) in 1806. Supposedly he and his sisters settled in Charleston after a slave uprising. His father was supposed to have been killed. In the 1850 census he is in Charleston and gives SC as his place of birth. I need to find some proof of this story and where he really was born. Does anyone have access to christenings in this area? Maybe this could help me find out if he was born in Charleston or not. The family was supposed to have left France because of religious persecution and went to England and ultimately to the Carribean. I have been told that Joseph's mother is buried at St. Philip's. Joseph however is buried in Anderson and was a member of the 1st Presbyterian there. Thanks for any help available. Beth Prevost Browne
