    3. Richard, It is my understanding that the city block on which the Cathedral originally stood burned during the 1880's. The entire block burned, taking not only the Cathedral (and its records) but also the seminary, parochial day-school, and bishop's residence which adjoined it. My earliest immigrant ancestor came to Charleston in 1836 and was ordained a priest, probably at this seminary, before being appointed to the newly-formed St. Patrick's out in Charleston Neck. He brought siblings with him and I descend from a brother. However, I can find no records of these siblings (marriages, deaths, baptisms of children) at St. Patrick's. I am beginning to assume that the family originally belonged at the Cathedral and therefore their sacramental activities were recorded there. And subsequently lost to fire. If you find out something different, would you let me know? It would vastly alter my understanding of this history.
