    3. Charleston does have a City Archives, but its holdings are limited. The information I have is several years old, but address was 701 East Bay Street, Suite 348, Charleston, SC 29401 phone 843 724 7301 These are predominantly municipal records. Other resources: Charleston Co Health Department has death records 1915 - date. Birth records 1877-1915 (address I have is definitely incorrect- Don't know if they have a web site or not. Phone might be correct : 843 724 5930 Clerk of Common Pleas 2144 Melbourne Ave., North Charleston SC 29405; 843 740 5700 has records of civil actions 1856 - date (Note: this office might have moved - its been in a temporary facility until the new county courthouse is completed Judge of Probate - 2144 Melbourne Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405; 843 740 5890 has marriage records late 1800s - date; Wills 1869 - date. As with the Clerk of Court for Common Pleas, this office might have moved (or may move soon) Register of Mesne Conveyance - 2 Courthouse Square, Charleston SC 29401. 843 723 6780 - Deeds from 1719 - date. This information comes from a hand-out provided by the Charleston County Library. This is several years old and you might check various on-line resources for current holdings, addresses and phones. Generally, records in Charleston are highly scattered throughout a broad range of repositories. -----Original Message----- From: Frances Rouse <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, July 23, 1999 7:19 AM Subject: [SCCHARLE-L] CITY ARCHIVES >I read somewhere that Charleston had a city Archives, I am unable to >locate this information or the address. 3. About nine years ago I went to the Charleston City Archives and saw original ledgers for the Charleston Orphan House from 1829-1830. I remember they were in the process of moving to a new location at that time, and I haven't been back to check since. Does the city have a homepage? You might be able to e-mail for directions and/or phone number. It may have merged with another city department, or they may have shipped the records to Columbia to the state archives, but I know the records exist...in fact, it was a big area with shelves and shelves of old records. I can't remember what else they had. At the time, we were only really interested in seeing the Orphan House records which were impressive. In my notes I have the name, Susan King, and a phone number - 724-7302, but I'm sure that's out of date. 2. Post the information in separate queries. That way everyone on the list sees it and it ends up in the SCCHARLE-L list archives for future research. 3. North Augusta, SC is on the border of SC and GA. Augusta is on the other side of the border. I believe the border was changed at some time and it split the town of Augusta, so it was renamed North Augusta on the SC side. 3. Jackie - There was a McCartan Campbell who owned land in both Augusta GA in the late 1700s and in Charleston SC. I think he was a trader of some sort as I recall. One of my ancestors purchased land and a plantation (in Augusta GA) that Campbell had initially owned so I have seen his name periodically. Perhaps this Mac Cartan & Campbells is connected with him. He was fairly prominent. I think he died in Charleston, but that's only a recollection (I don't have any supporting documentation myself). There is a web site that will allow you to put in place names' e.g. Hatchet Creek and perhaps that will help you locate it. Many of the creeks in SC changed names one or more times, depending upon who was living on the land at the time. Try this site for help with the creek.http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html I did find a Hatchet Creek GA in the northern part of the state - That would have been on the Indian trading trails through Augusta and on into SC during that time frame. Another thought is to check with the South Carolina HIstorical Society on Meeting Street in Charleston - They might have a file (or information) on Mac Cartan and Campbells. They have extensive manuscript and pamphlet collections that might yield some further informationl. Part of their catalog is on-line, so perhaps you can locate something through that. I lived in Charleston SC for 7 years and have done lots of research in the Augusta GA area and am unaware of an Augusta SC (at least in the low country - Charleston area) Looks like you're on the trail of a very interesting story. There are likely more clues to be found. 3. Does anyone know whether Augusta GA was part of SC during this time? Or is there an Augusta SC(perhaps in Charleston area)? Also anything about merchants Macartan & Campbells? Hatchet Creek? Indian chief Mortar? I have an excerpt from SC Council Journal, A.M. Council Chamber(WHAT DOES AM STAND FOR?) , Sept. 2, 1763 of an affidavit of an Indian trader who gives account of my ggggggrandfather Samuel VENNING of Macartan & Campbells and his man Edward SCOPEAM being killed by Mortar & his men. This story has been handed down with several variations, but this is first "proof" that it is true. Any help with any of these ?s will be greatly appreciated. Jackie

This will expand the search to other names a place may be known by that are in the database. I remember reading somewhere that one of the first railroads built in SC was from Charleston to across the river from Augusta, GA. I'll bet it followed an established trade route. Frank J.
