    3. A John Conn received a land grant to 500 ac. on the Great Pee Dee River in 1734 (present day Georgetown Co.). By will dtd 29 Nov 1758 he bequeathed half of the land to his son Thomas Conn and the other half to his grandsons John Conn of Harvard and John Gregg of Groton, Mass. Thomas Conn and his wife Mary (of Prince George Parish) sold the land in 1767 to Samuel Grier. It is my understanding that there was a Conn family in old Darlington district but I know nothing about them. Hope this helps, regards, Deryl ----- Original Message ----- From: Peggy Conn Burley <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 1999 11:00 PM Subject: [SCCHARLE-L] Roll Call > I am researching the surname Conn. 3. I am researching the surname Conn. I have been told that two brothers, Richard Conn and John Conn, went from Ireland to England to South Carolina to Alabama to Mississippi. I didn't know where in South Carolina that they had arrived. Recently though, an older relative said that he had been told that John arrived in Charles Town, South Carolina in the 1760's. I don't know when Richard arrived. John's wife was possibly named Agnes Ann ?(I don't know her surname.) Does anyone out there know anything about this John? 2. Thanks for the info - that certainly makes lots of sense! And it fits with some of the things I have heard about what they did when they got to GA and FL.

    3. After Florida became a state in 1845, there was lots of land available for purchase, pretty cheaply, and the politics of Florida between 1845 up until 1860 leaned more and more toward South Carolina's secessionist policy. Most of the Indians had been chased out of the state or down to the Everglades. Cotton became a huge new agricultural prospect for the state with the center of cotton planting and slave holdings in the north central part of the state, between the Apalachicola and the Suwannee rivers. Further south in Florida was still a "new frontier", always a draw to those seeking their fortune. Florida must have seemed familiar to those from South Carolina, yet still full of cheap land and adventure. (And still is seen that way, today.)
