Sydney, Some advice - subscribe to as many mailing lists as you can in any state where you find any Germany's. You never can tell who knows what about someone in your family. I found info in some of the strangest places - found out my family is not from Mass. originally, but R.I., then CT., THEN Mass. I also found a lost branch of the family by using Soundex and coming up with a Wilkerson/Wilkinson. We though the branch was lost, but it seems that this staid englishman married a Cherokee Indian and probably had to change his name from Wilkinson to Wilkerson. Why, we may never know, but my theory is that he was disowned by his family, and changed his name in protest, so his family would not have to suffer the pain of bigotry from his English family. We descendants of the English can be quite snobby! Good luck! If I find any good sources in my search, I will let you know! Hello listers, This is my first post. I am just starting on my Germany surname line. What a hard family to do a search on! Thanks to some kind researchers I have something to go on now. I am expecting an article on this family and 4 pages of research in the mail soon, but I thought I would post a little now. According to several sources, seven sons of Henry Germany of Ireland came into Charleston, SC about 1730's. They later migrated to Savannah, GA and on to Augusta. Then some stayed and some moved west into Mississippi. My line stayed in Columbia County, GA, at least some of them did. Sarah Germany married Dr. William Collier in Columbia County in 1811. As far as I can tell the7 original brothers died in Charleston. They were "Irish" John Germany, Robert, James, William, Samuel, Joseph, and Alexander. I am just beginning to get info, but am hoping there are some other Germany relatives around. Contact me if you know of this bunch. Best to all on the list. Sydney(female version of the name) Cardner Florida
According to my records, Miss Mary Jane Morford who married William A. Ashley in Charleston, SC on April 19, 1825 died fairly young and is buried there in Charleston. If you have access to any resources book for this area, could you please see if you have this family listed in it? I would be very appreciative of any information you might could provide pertaining to this family. Best regards, Jane Ashley Benson
Would like to jump into the conversation about scanners --- I have a Visioneer 3100 that cost me $40 after rebate, and I get excellent results with it. The software that came with it is quite adequate for scanning photos and copying. I manage fairly well with the OCR as well, but it could be better. OCR results depend largely on the resolution of the scan and the OCR software. I would be wary of the all-in-one machines because most of the lower price ones will scan only in black & white. If you want to scan color photos, you're out of luck. My scanner is a 30-bit machine - the latest models are 36 bit, and that affects the price. I get very good results with 30 bits. Anne White
Could someone with access to the "Index to Wills of Charleston County" look to see if William Ray or Wray who died in July 1817 had a Will or the Will of any other (Ray or Wray) from around that period. I found in the 1942 SC Historical Magazine The Marriage and Death Notices from The City Gazette of Charleston SC. September 4, 1823 my GGG grandfather Henry Wray was admitted to the Charleston Orphan House by his mother Sara D. Wray. The entry does not mention his father. I am trying to find out who Henry Wray's father was. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Sincerely, D. Scott Dingler D. I've been gone from the lists for a long time and wanted to ask if anyone here is researching the surname RICHARDSON. In particular, I am searching for Thomas Richardson born 1816. The family has always said Thomas was born in Charleston, but we've never been able to find any traces of him there. Even after hiring 2 professional researchers. One of those old family tales says he may have even changed his name to WATSON (first or last name??) after he got into some kind of trouble in "OLD SUMPTER" and he fled the area..... It's possible he has other male family members named James, John and maybe even Jacob or Francis. Just some clues. Does anyone have a stray Thomas Richardson born 1816 or so? Amy McCroskie
Hi, kathryn - I wondered also if our families might be related! My ancestors went from SC to GA to FL. I will let you know what I find out! Do you have any relatives in Tennessee that you know of? Glo Marquis

I am using my daughter's laptop while my hard drive is in the hospital - did not mean to send that prematurely! I am tracing an ancestor who came from - possibly Germany - in 1753, went to Rotterdam, caught the ship Elizabeth, and came to Charleston. He came with his wife, two daughters, and son. His name is Thomas KICKLIGHER, KICHELAYTER, or other variation. If I find information that may be about your family, I'll send it! Gloria Marquis
Kathryn, I am trying to trace an ancest
I'm looking for information about Jacob KELLY/Kehle/Khele/Kelhe, who arrived in Charleston, SC aboard the Caledonia with his wife and son, Andrew, in 1752. They sailed from Holland, but were probably from Wurtemburg, Germany. Also, I am interested in information about Andrew KELLY and his son, Samuel KELLY, b. 1800 and his son, Samuel Riley KELLY and daughter, ROSANNAH KELLY b. 1832 (my g-g-grandmother), all born in South Carolina. This family moved to Monroe/Conecuh Counties in Alabama. Any information about them, particularly about where they lived, prior to coming to Alabama, will be appreciated. Kathryn
