BINGO you got it! How exciting. I am subscribed to the D list instead of L, so received this a bit later than your other posts. Yes I'd love a copy of the will. Now I know how this John Axson fits into the larger Axson puzzle. Indeed, his mother was a MOUZON so he is probably a cousin of mine, though no blood kin to the girl he raised, my gggggm Laura Washington Michau Gadsden. Thanks..... Maria and all: I have different parents for the John Axson who m. Mary Ann GIbbes and John Axson who m. Martha Ann Arthur. I have the first John's parents as Samuel Jacob Axson and Elizabeth You, and the second John's parents as William Axson and Susannah Elizabeth Mouzon. Which are the correct parents and if both sets of parents had a son named John, can you tell me the proper birth and death dates? I have Martha Ann Arthur's husband as d. June 10, 1842, which does not match up with the will dates of 1834/1840 shown by CJK Also, I have William and Susannah as having twins, John and Jehu, b. Nov. 29, 1764. Is that correct? List: Sisters, Jane Savage (b. abt. 1725-d. 1781) and Mary Savage (b. abt. 1721-d. 1804), (Jane married Edward Blake of S.C.) have been reported to have been born in Bermuda (Mary) and either Bermuda or Jamaica (Jane). Their father was Capt. Habijah Savage (killed, 1746 by pirates), but their mother is unknown to me. Is anyone aware of genealogy sites for either of these locations? Edward

I don't know about the AXSON ancestors of William Axson, but since noone has yet responded I thought I'd add a piece from my family's history: John Axson, a planter of St. James Santee Parish, and his first wife Martha Ann, were childless. When Mary Stead Allston Michau (my gggggrandmother) died in 1807, her widower Abraham Michau entrusted the care of raising their infant daughter Laura to John and Martha Ann Axson. (Martha Ann died when Laura was about 11 old. John later married Mary Ann Gibbes of Charleston). To John Axson, Laura was his own child, and so he calls her in his will. When Laura married Fisher Gadsden they named their first child John Axson Gadsden. The Axson family bible, which was given to Laura, is now located in the archives of the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah. That church was chosen because President Woodrow Wilson had married an Axson. (The couple had been married there by their two fathers, both Presbyterian ministers, so the bible was deposited in those archives.) Jerri Lynne, Thank you so much for offering to help me. I have found the following: My ggrandfather went by the name William (his first name may have been Robert) RADCLIFFE. He married Mary Ann FLOYD 2 April 1844. They were in the 1850 and 1860 Census' for New Hanover County (Wilmington District) NC. In 1860 their ages were 41 and 31 Their children were Kate 6(my grandmother), John 3 and Robert 3/12. Now, how do I find their birthdates and who their parents were (marriage certificate?) My mother told me they were from Charleston SC. Mary Ann's mother may have been Patsy Rogers. Really appreciate any help you can offer. I am thrilled at finding them. If I can look up anything in Delaware, let me know. Sallie ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hello -- there is a TOUHEY family from Charleston who seem to have intermarried with a SLATTERY family in the 19th century. They are all buried together down at St. Lawrence Cemetery on the TOUHEY plot. I am curious about the SLATTERY men buried there because they may have been cousins to my Slatterys from Kilrush, County Clare. (One of the Slatterys on the Touhey plot was born in Kilfidane, County Clare.) Any clues on Touhey I'd surely appreciate. Maria Atlanta, GA
As a former Goose Creek resident , I can tell you it is north of the City of Charleston.(now a suburb) The Parish of St. James, Goose Creek is a well established church (and cemetery, I believe) that is still marked and discussed. Old parish records are available in the Charleston area libraries (e.g. South Carolina Historical Society and Charleston Library Society, I believe). A book about the history of Goose Creek was published in the late 1980s or early 90s and you might find that helpful in reading about the area. (Sorry, I don't recall the name, but I believe Goose Creek was in the title) It talks of some of the early settlers and the history of the area. The old church is still standing and the area is marked by historical markers, etc. That area is now Berkeley County, SC, but that county designation is more recent. (I think it was Charleston County before, but I'm not positive) The old 'Parish of St. James Goose Creek" and present day Goose Creek do not have the same boundaries, however. I have had similar difficulties in locating land from deeds where the only indication was neighbors' names - e.g. land adjoining, Smith, Lachicotte, Pritchard, and the creek. About all I've been able to do is track the neighbors deeds until I could find a natural source (creek or river) that would give me a specific area. There are plat maps available at the Charleston County Mesne Conveyance Office and the State Archives in Columbia, although I don't know if they would cover the time frame you seek. I think one of the librarians or archivists at the South Carolina Historical Society might be able to answer your questions off the tops of their heads. I think the line of the area known as "The Neck" has migrated north as the population has expanded and there is still an area known as 'the neck' today, but it is certainly far north of Calhoun! I would certainly consider Magnolia Cemetery to be in "the Neck" area today. Here is a quote from the Charleston Tour Guide Information Manual, copyright 1985 - "An Act of 10 Dec 1849 annexed to the city that part of the Parish of St. Philip which lay between the then existing northern boundary (Boundary or Calhoun Street) and a line drawn due west from the Cooper River to the Ashley river, by the junction of Meeting and King Streets. This line ran through the center of Mount Pleasant Street and was the city's northern boundary for more than 120 years. The boundary was advanced up The Neck again in 1969, 1970 and 1976. " Hope this is helpful. Wish I could remember more of what I read and saw when I was there, but it was ten years ago. Have been searching many years for the parents of my Charleston rope making ancestor, Jesse Nell b. 1754 va., m. 1795 Charleston, d. 1823 Charleston. The name could have possibly been Neil or Neel. Jesse is somehow connected to the Brown, Broughton, and Lloyd families.
About a month ago or so, I posed similar questions to the SCROOTS list. I think that URQ5 and one or two others gave pretty good responses as to Charleston Neck, where I, too, had an ancestor. And my 5Xgrandfather PETER DUBOIS shows up in the 1790 census for St. James Goose Creek. I believe that a good explanation for its location and more is contained in J. Russell Cross' "Ramblins in Berkeley County." I am in the middle of some other projects at the moment but if no one else chimes in as to the latter, I will try to look it up in the next few days. Because I nuked my email account last week, I no longer have the answers I received as to Charleston Neck, but some hardy soul might find them in the SCROOTS list archives by searching for "Charleston Neck". Mary Alice, I have been having this same problem. My gr grandmother bought a property in "Charleston Neck" at the corner of Clements Ferry Road and State Road located on the old (what looked like) "Stranbok' farm. I went to Charleston recently and discovered that the area was beyond Line Street and beyond Magnolia Cemetery. It was located near Naval Base Road. There is a Clements Road and several blocks below that is Stromboli Ave. When I looked again at the plat, I could see the word was Stromboli, not Stranbok. This plat was from the 1870's. I did not even attempt to find "Old" St James Goose Creek though she had property there also. Barbara wouters@mindspring.com
Seeking relations of Rev. Patrick O'NEILL/O'NEILE, Irish Catholic immigrant from Kilkenny, Ireland who served St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Charleston from about 1837 - 1865. Several sisters and brothers were with him in 1850 and 1860. Related family names are Reid, Power(s), and possibly Brandt. Known to be in Charleston until just about 1866. Julie O'Neil Perkins
