I am looking for info on John Cooper of TN and SC who had a son named Jacob Nicholas???b.TN then went to>AL>MS My surnames: Creel, NIcholas, Nichols, Nichol, Wiggin(s), Owen(s), Pendarvis, Jones, Smith, Strickland(lin), Dearman, of Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Florida, TN, North Caroline, South Caroline, Georiga (Choctaw? and Cherokee?) regards, pat
If you can get ahold of Hagey's book about the Jews in Charleston (naturally, I cannot recall the title just now and am dashing out the door for a miserable dental appt), do so. It is wonderful. Most of his material comes from Elzas' Jews of SC. The 100 year battle between the reform and orthodox Jews in Charleston reminds me of John STeinbeck's The Roque Wars. A synagogue divided over whether to play the organ or not. I have ancestors on both sides of the battle. Mary Alice, Just went through my deleted files and found a posting of mine from about a month ago. Below is the information from the Charleston phone book. If you can get in touch with Mr. Briebart, Solomon or George, can't remember which is the historian, I am certain that he will be happy to steer you in the right direction. Mr. Solomon Briebart taught my government class in high school....many years ago! Good Luck! Linda Caroline, Just looked in a Charleston telephone book and found the following: Brith Sholom Beth Israel Orthodox Congregation 182 Rutledge Avenue Charleston, SC 29401 Telephone 843-577-6599 Also, there is a Mr. Briebart who has done a lot of research on Jewish history in South Carolina. Not sure which Mr. Briebart, but you might be able to reach him through the synagogue above or at Beth Elohim/Reform Synagogue, 86 Hasell Street, Chas, SC, 29401. Telephone: 843-723-1090 Hope this helps. linda
During the recent discussion on historic synagogues and churches, someone posted the name of a Contact re Charleston Jewish History. I would appreciate a REPEAT POSTING of this resource person's name and address. Then I will print the page for a fellow researcher whom I met yesterday. She has just started "long distance" genealogy research on her Charleston ancestors - including a possible Jewish family line in the1850's. THANK YOU. Mary Alice
I don't know if I am the person who was talking about researching historic Charleston Synagogues, but I am doing it. Although things are temporarily on hold until some health things are squared away. Temple Beth El is the oldest and very helpful. College of Charleston is another good source. I am having a difficult time finding anything on Temple Shearith, which was the orthodox synagogue. However, there is a book at the U. of NC in Charlotte Library called "The Jews of SC" by Elzas. See if your library can get a copy for you. Mine could not, but a nice person photocopied specific pages for me. Right now, I cannot reach my resouces to give you addresses etc because I am in a wheelchair and cannot roll it on the stupid carpeting. I'll be alright, but am feeling like a grounded whale and very frustrated because I cannot reach my file boxes. You can find the addresses you need on the SC web page, I'm sure. Caroline Looking for Louis Harrison, Rebecca Jones, Israel Jones, Sarah Henry Jones, Maurice L. and Miriam Henry. -----Original Message----- From: MErwin114@aol.com <MErwin114@aol.com> To: SCCHARLE-L@rootsweb.com <SCCHARLE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, March 20, 2000 11:13 AM Subject: [SCCHARLE] Historic Charleston Synagogues/Churches > > > >During the recent discussion on historic synagogues and churches, someone >posted the name of a Contact re Charleston Jewish History. > >I would appreciate a REPEAT POSTING of this resource person's name and >address. Hi Joe, Here is a little on William Capers from this website<http://metalab.unc.edu/docsouth/clay/clay.html>. To overcome these conditions, the Right-Reverend William Capers, distinguished in the Methodist Church, organised a wide system of missionary work among the plantation negroes, whereby preaching and catechising by white ministers took place once a month. Many of the great planters assisted in this good work, Senator R. Barnwell Rhett, Sr. being prominently associated with Bishop Capers. Senator Rhett built a large church, which was attended by the negroes from five plantations, and regularly by his own family. This should at least point you in the right direction. Good luck, Waring "Butch" Hills Mt. Pleasant, SC// __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com

Hello Listers: The following notice appeared in the Charleston Observer, September 24, 1836: Marriages & Deaths, Charleston Observer, 1827-1845, p. 116 [p. 117} On Sunday evening, 18th inst., by the Rev. Wm. Capers, Mr. F. H. Alley, to Miss Elizabeth Jane, daughter of late Wm. Robison, all of this city. I should like to know what church this Rev. Wm. CAPERS was a pastor of so that I might obtain records of my great grandfather F. H. ALLEY, who was born in Gibraltar January 24, 1812, and landed in Charleston, SC with his brother John B. P. ALLEY on November 14, 1817. He and this Elizabeth Jane ROBISON had eight children. Any information about any of these people will be very helpful. Thank you. Joe P. ALLEY JAlley1@aol.com

Several weeks ago, there was much discussion concerning Charleston Neck. Several on the list seem to be knowledgable about this area. Can anyone tell me something of "Hickory Hill Plantation, Marrington, Goose Creek"? This is listed as the birthplace of my gg....grandmother in 1779. (BENTHAM) Or point me in the right direction for further research? Thanks! Linda Kelly kkelly@falconpc.com
